Pragmatics is a discipline that has been developed since in the early 1970s. Although it has been over 20 year now, not many people have written nor showed an interest in this area. This Thesis is an attempt to study the pragmatic convention of a group of speakers both in the Indonesian and German language.
The problems discussed in this thesis are as follows: the differences and similarities of pragmatic forms in both Indonesian and German; and pragmatic factors that should be emphasized in the teaching of Indonesian and German. The purpose of this study is to obtain the pragmatic forms in Indonesia, the similarities and differences in pragmatic form in both Indonesian and German; and to find the factors that should be emphasized in teaching of German-in Indonesia
The finding in this analysis shows that the factors that should be emphasized in the teaching of German the differences in the expression of meanings in Indonesian and German, for example, the word `Herr' which cannot occur in isolation, and cannot be use with forenames or nicknames, but it should occur with Emily names. The polite form in German uses the conditional forms `Konnten Sle.... ?' and the conditional clause `Es ware nett '. The Use of the particles `vielleicht, mil, dock' has a great effect the polite forms. Also the forms `es' and `man' that do not exist in Indonesian should be emphasized by the teacher of German."

""Pragmatics is the study of human communication: the choices speakers make to express their intended meaning and the kinds of inferences that hearers draw from an utterance in the context of its use. This Handbook surveys pragmatics from different perspectives, presenting the main theories in pragmatic research, incorporating seminal research as well as cutting-edge solutions. It addresses questions of rational and empirical research methods, what counts as an adequate and successful pragmatic theory, and how to go about answering problems raised in pragmatic theory. In the fast-developing field of pragmatics, this Handbook fills the gap in the market for a one-stop resource to the wide scope of today's research and the intricacy of the many theoretical debates. It is an authoritative guide for graduate students and researchers with its focus on the areas and theories that will mark progress in pragmatic research in the future"--"
