Abstrak :
Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh media sosial terhadap kesehatan mental masyarakat selama pandemi COVID-19. Ada banyak jenis penyakit mental yang disebabkan oleh penggunaan media sosial yang telah dilaporkan, namun makalah ini akan fokus pada tiga penyakit mental: depresi, kecemasan, dan stres traumatis sekunder. “Seberapa signifikan dampak konten yang terlihat di media sosial terhadap kesejahteraan psikologis orang?” akan membantu makalah untuk meneliti lebih spesifik tentang jenis konten yang dilihat dan bagaimana konten tersebut menyebabkan penyakit mental (depresi, kecemasan, stres traumatis sekunder). Selanjutnya makalah ini menggunakan teori Uses and Gratification. Metode dalam penulisan ini adalah melalui penggunaan metode penelitian sekunder, dengan menggunakan lima artikel jurnal yang berbeda. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa orang mempunyai keinginan untuk mengumpulkan informasi mengenai COVID-19 karena kebutuhan kognitif mereka, oleh karena itu media sosial digunakan untuk menerima berita tentang pandemi. Jenis konten dilihat di media sosial yang menyebabkan penyakit mental ini adalah konten terkait bencana, yaitu berita pandemi COVID-19 (jumlah kematian, jumlah orang yang terinfeksi) dan juga berita palsu yang beredar di media sosial yang terbukti menimbulkan kepanikan. ......This paper aims to find the effects of social media on the mental health of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are many types of mental illnesses caused by social media usage that have been reported, however this paper will focus on three mental illnesses: depression, anxiety, and secondary traumatic stress. “How significant are the impacts of the content seen on social media on people’s psychological well-being?” will assist the paper to research more in specific on the types of content being seen and how that content causes these mental illnesses (depression, anxiety, secondary traumatic stress). Furthermore the paper uses the Uses and Gratification theory. The methods in this paper is through the use of secondary research methods, by using five different journal articles. The findings shows that people are in a constant need to gather knowledge of COVID-19 due to their cognitive needs, therefore social media is being used as a medium to receive news regarding the pandemic. The type of content being seen on social media that causes these mental illnesses are disaster-related content, which are the updates of the COVID-19 pandemic (death count, number of people being infected) and also the fake news that are circulating on social media which has proven to cause panic.
