Abstrak :
Di Indonesia nama Montesquieu lebih dikenal di kalangan hukum karena karyanya yang termasyhur yang berjudul L'Esprit des Lois (Hakikat Hukum) (1748) biasanya dikaji secara mendalam di fakultas-fakultas hukum di negeri kita. Karya ini menjelaskan dan menjabarkan Trias Politica, yaitu pentingnya kekuasaan pemerintahan suatu negara dibagi dalam tiga kekuasaan yang terpisah: l.eksekutif, 2. yudikatif, dan 3. legislatif. Di negeri kita tidak banyak orang yang mengenal Montesquieu sebagai pengarang biasa, sebagai penulis Lettres persanes misalnya. Pembaca Indonesia hanya mengenal Mdntesquieu sebagai seorang filsuf dengan gagasannya mengenai Trias Politica disamping filsuf-filsuf besar Perancis lainnya di abad ke-18 seperti Diderot, Voltaire, dan Rousseau, masing-masing dengan pemikirannya yang cemerlang. Pelajaran sastra asing lebih ditekankan pada pengenalan sastra Inggris dengan membaca dan mempelajari baik karya-karya asli maupun karya-karya terjemahan Shakespeare dan pengarangpengarang Inggris atau Amerika lainnya. Karya-karya pengarang Perancis kurang dikenal. Mengingat hal-hal tersebut di atas, peneliti merasa tertarik untuk mengkaji salah satu karya sastra Montesquieu yang terkenal. Karya ini berupa sebuah roman epistoler dan berjudul Lettres persanes (Surat-surat Persia).

Abstrak :
Tim Fulford examines landscape description in the writings of Thomson, Cowper, Johnson, Gilpin, Repton, Wordsworth, Coleridge and others. He shows how landscape description formed part of a larger debate over the nature of liberty and authority in a Britain developing its sense of nationhood, and reveals the tensions that arose as writers sought to define their relationship to the public sphere. Fulford's innovative study offers a new view of literary and political influence linking the early eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Abstrak :
This is the first collaborative volume to place Shakespeare’s works within the landscape of early modern political thought. Until recently, literary scholars have not generally treated Shakespeare as a participant in the political thought of his time, unlike his contemporaries Ben Jonson, Edmund Spenser and Philip Sidney. At the same time, historians of political thought have rarely turned their attention to major works of poetry and drama. A distinguished international and interdisciplinary team of contributors examines the full range of Shakespeare’s writings in order to challenge conventional interpretations of plays central to the canon, such as Hamlet ; open up novel perspectives on works rarely considered to be political, such as the Sonnets ; and focus on those that have been largely neglected, such as The Merry Wives of Windsor. The result is a coherent and challenging portrait of Shakespeare’s distinctive engagement with the characteristic questions of early modern political thought : among them, corruption and citizenship, education and persuasion, the hazards of the court and the demands of the commonwealth.
