In translating literary works, choosing translation strategies and approaches
becomes a crucial step that can affect things that are central to a source text, such as
nonstandard language variety. Indeed, there have been numerous studies that discuss
nonstandard language translation strategies and approaches with different language
pairing and literary works as their object of study, yet there has not a study that covers an
Indonesian-originated nonstandard language variety like Colloquial Jakartan Indonesian
(CJI) translation contained in an Indonesian literary work that is translated into a foreign
language. This paper sets out to examine the aspects of CJI Low variety's translation
strategies and approaches through the English translation of one of the Indonesian
historical fiction novels titled Senja di Jakarta. The method of this research consists of
analyzing the characters' speech containing dialectal markers from the original novel to
see how dialect is marked and comparing them to the English translation to figure out
how they deal and render the CJI variety that is central to the novel. The results of the
analysis show that the translator approaches the matter of CJI in a very attentive manner,
and the most frequently used translation strategy used in the target texts is the use of
Situational/Cultural Adequacy.

"In the article the concept of semiotic mediation, appropriation, internalization,
Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and scaffolding in particular were
reviewed to provide understanding of the process. Under the concept of
semiotic mediation, the issue of how children learn through imitating adults was
examined with inputs from second language acquisition theories. Vygotsky?s
concept of appropriation provides the springboard for a discussion on how
children may appropriate the psychological tool of language through modeling
and text meditation in the context of second language learning. It is hoped
that the understanding of these concepts could lead to more insights in order
to understand the various changes observable in children at early age as they
nudge to achieve their potential in their literacy development. The information
gathered in the paper may be used by parents or teachers in preschool as the
foundation to help children acquire literacy skills at early age."

"In the history of modern Malay literature, the 1960s are labelled by many literary
critics as era picisan (the age of dime fiction) because of the flood of karya picisan
(dime fiction) in the local market. Karya picisan here refers to works that clearly
manipulate sexual themes, with the intent of conjuring an atmosphere of eroticism
to attract readers. Critics generally do not consider these works to be karya sastra
(literary works) because they do not fulfil two important criteria that commonly
classify the term ?literature?, namely bahasa yang indah (aesthetic language) and isi
yang berfaedah (beneficial content). In the context of this definition of ?literature?,
Shahnon Ahmad?s 1965 novel Terdedah is considered problematic because of
incongruities in the estimation of its ?literariness?. As opposed to critics who
initially labelled it karya picisan, the ?literariness? of Terdedah was defended by
its own author because it contained elements social criticism. This difference in
opinion raises an important point regarding the commonly accepted definitions
of ?literature? and ?literariness? in Malay literature: after Shahnon proclaimed his
novel?s worth based on its social criticism, critical reception towards Terdedah
showed an unmistakable shift. With respect to this shift of opinion, this article
will perform a critical analysis of the meaning of ?literariness? in relation to
Terdedah, and in doing so, clearly determine its status as either a karya picisan or
karya sastra, based on the definition of ?literature? practised in Malay literature."

"What is meant by contemporary literature? The first thing that comes up in mind is that the terminology of contemporary literature points out to ?literature that is new? or ?literature that is very recent?, and constitutes a new trend lastly in touch with public. With this, contemporarity might possibly be seen or measured on the basis of time frame. In China, contemporary literature is not measured merely by the most recent time and the changing literary trend in a certain period of time, it is apparently not free from the political influence of the goverment in power. Political guidance issued by the goverment in a certain period, will define the change in the literary trend in China. Uniquely, the literary trend in a certain period not merely brings out certain themes, but also followed by a great deal of literary works representing the emerging literary trend. In China, by reading a literary work, one will easily be able to detect when that kind of literary works approximately emerged, and who were the authors producing that works.

"The Dalā’il al-nāshid ‘an aḥkām al-walā’im fī-l-masājid (Arguments of the Seeker for Legal Judgements concerning Festive Meals in Mosques) is a short tract, written in 1938 in Malay in Arabic script by Yaḥyā b. ‘Uthmān b. ‘AbdAllāh, none other than a son of the renowned Batavian muftī Sayyid ‘Uthmān (1822-1914). Protesting against the (in his view) bid‘a (unauthorized religious innovation) of organizing festive meals in mosques, he felt it his duty to try to stop his co-religionists from doing wrong. Not being a theologian himself, his pamphlet is basically a tissue of quotations drawn from the prolific work of his well-known father."
