Woven through qualitative analyses and feminist perspectives, this research focuses on a case study that explore how lesbian struggle against heterononnativity. Data analysis is based on respondents, active participant to discussion in the Internal Forum of Swara Srikandi's website, and in depth interview to prominent lesbian figures. This research shows seven topical problems that reflect how lesbian dealing with heterosexism and homophobia. Coming out appear to be an important part of overall strategies. In the case of Swara Srikandi, however, coming out appear to be in its initial stage, simply to advance lesbian identity. Embryonic as it may, this strategy seems able to produce correctional discourse on lesbianism.

How are sexuality and erotic desire expressed in language?Do gay men and lesbians have a language of their own? Does ‘no’ always mean no? Is sexual desire beyond words? This lively and accessible textbook looks at how we talk about sex and why we talk about it the way we do. Drawing on a wide range of examples, from personal ads to phone sex, from sadomasochistic scenes to sexual assault trials, the book provides a clear introduction to the relationship between language and sexuality.Using a broad definition of ‘sexuality’, the book encompasses not only issues surrounding sexual orientation and identity, for instance whether gay men and lesbians use language differently from straight people, but also questions about the discursive construction of sexuality and the verbal expression of erotic desire. Cameron and Kulick contextualize their findings within current research in linguistics, anthropology and psychology, and bring together relevant theoretical debates on sexuality, gender, identity, desire, meaning and power.

This book provides an original insight into how families of origin of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) people are involved in negotiating meanings and experiences of sexuality and intimacy, an underexplored dimension of queer family life. Delving into the perspectives of families of origin and showing the complexity and heterogeneity of the ways people with their different gender and sexual identities "do" families across generations, it contributes to querying the very distinction between families of origin and families of choice, and questions the (hetero)normative assumptions about forms and boundaries of family this distinction rests upon. A focus on marginal contexts, such as Southern Europe, and on marginal subjects, like bisexuals or black lesbians, is proposed as a way to challenge the universality of privileged narratives within heteronormativity, homonormativity and anglocentrism, and to reveal unexpected resources families of origin mobilise to make sense of GLBT identities and lived experiences. The book poses a crucial question: how can alliances along family ties develop on the basis of shared stories of family diversity and marginalised identities, rather than of loving (and normative) support to GLBT people in need and an advocacy in their name from a position of heterosexual privilege? -- publisher description.
