Antique ceramics have played a prominent part in the traditional customs and beliefs of Indonesians since early times. Findings of pottery in prehistorical burial places indicate their importance as funeral goods. Antique ceramics are still used in important cermonies and fertility rites in the royal courts of Java and in many remote villages.Shapes and motifs of foreign ceramics can be traced on local ceramics, bronzes and textiles. ... The text on the origins of antique ceramics found in Indonesia is updated with some new findings of foreign ceramics and data on their origins and fifty new photographs have been added. Since the publication of this book in 1981, awareness of ceramics as objects of art has considerably increased. Antique and modern ceramics are eagerly bought as collector's and decorative items.
