......Past literatures revealed that the presence of audience and competition had been shown to be advantageous upon individual performances on simple physical tasks. However, the effect had not been explored further for complex mental tasks, such as the ones depicted on university exams. This study examined how the presence of competition and audience impacted individuals’ complex mental task performance. Attention-overload model proposed that complex tasks would impair individual performances as it triggered cognitive overload. 30 samples of participants were asked to perform a letter-copying task individually. They were randomly assigned to three conditions: no audience-no competition condition, audience-no competition condition, or audience-competition condition. 3-level between subjects design was used to compare means of score accuracy for each condition. Results showed that performance did not differ regardless conditions they were assigned to. The presence of audience and competition had no impact in the individual performance. Therefore, this showed no support for attention-overload model.
