Abstrak :
A concise survey of the current state of knowledge in 1972 about solving elliptic boundary-value eigenvalue problems with the help of a computer. This volume provides a case study in scientific computing -- the art of utilizing physical intuition, mathematical theorems and algorithms, and modern computer technology to construct and explore realistic models of problems arising in the natural sciences and engineering.

Intended mainly for use as a reference manual, this third edition encompasses all the improvements of the newest version of the PLTMG software package. This updated version introduces several significant changes, including the following: The data structures defining the domain (triangulation and skeleton) have been simplified; more general boundary conditions are allowed. The internal data structure (triangle tree) has been replaced by a simple triangulation; the adaptive algorithms have been revised to use this simple data structure. The linear equations solvers are multigraph methods, which are simple ILU factorizations with strong connections to the hierarchical basis multigrid method. The graphics packages have been improved and now include expanded options. The test driver has a new X-Windows gui option.

Abstrak :
This compact yet thorough tutorial is the perfect introduction to the basic concepts of solving partial differential equations (PDEs) using parallel numerical methods. In just eight short chapters, the authors provide readers with enough basic knowledge of PDEs, discretization methods, solution techniques, parallel computers, parallel programming, and the run-time behavior of parallel algorithms to allow them to understand, develop, and implement parallel PDE solvers. Examples throughout the book are intentionally kept simple so that the parallelization strategies are not dominated by technical details. A Tutorial on Elliptic PDE Solvers and Their Parallelization is a valuable aid for learning about the possible errors and bottlenecks in parallel computing. One of the highlights of the tutorial is that the course material can run on a laptop, not just on a parallel computer or cluster of PCs, thus allowing readers to experience their first successes in parallel computing in a relatively short amount of time.

Abstrak :
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for solving partial differential equations, developed in the late 1990s, have become popular among computational scientists. This book covers both theory and computation as it focuses on three primal DG methods -- the symmetric interior penalty Galerkin, incomplete interior penalty Galerkin, and nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin which are variations of interior penalty methods. The author provides the basic tools for analysis and discusses coding issues, including data structure, construction of local matrices, and assembling of the global matrix. Computational examples and applications to important engineering problems are also included.

Abstrak :
The Finite Element Method for Elliptic Problems is the only book available that analyzes in depth the mathematical foundations of the finite element method. It is a valuable reference and introduction to current research on the numerical analysis of the finite element method, as well as a working textbook for graduate courses in numerical analysis. It includes many useful figures, and there are many exercises of varying difficulty. Although nearly 25 years have passed since this book was first published, the majority of its content remains up-to-date. Chapters 1 through 6, which cover the basic error estimates for elliptic problems, are still the best available sources for material on this topic. The material covered in Chapters 7 and 8, however, has undergone considerable progress in terms of new applications of the finite element method; therefore, the author provides, in the Preface to the Classics Edition, a bibliography of recent texts that complement the classic material in these chapters.
