"
This book shows how some of these ideas from the science of complexity can be applied to the study and management of social phenomena, including traffic flow, economic markets, opinion formation and the growth and structure of cities. Building on these successes, the book argues that the complex-systems view of the social sciences has now matured sufficiently for it to be possible, desirable and perhaps essential to attempt a grander objective: to integrate these efforts into a unified scheme for studying, understanding and ultimately predicting what happens in the world we have made. Such a scheme would require the mobilization and collaboration of many different research communities, and would allow society and its interactions with the physical environment to be explored through realistic models and large-scale data collection and analysis. It should enable us to find new and effective solutions to major global problems such as conflict, disease, financial instability, environmental despoliation and poverty, while avoiding unintended policy consequences. It could give us the foresight to anticipate and ameliorate crises, and to begin tackling some of the most intractable problems of the twenty-first century."

"This brief is an essay at the interface of philosophy and complexity research, trying to inspire the reader with new ideas and new conceptual developments of cellular automata. Going beyond the numerical experiments of Steven Wolfram, it is argued that cellular automata must be considered complex dynamical systems in their own right, requiring appropriate analytical models in order to find precise answers and predictions in the universe of cellular automata."

"Today, our cities are an embodiment of the complex, historical evolution of knowledge, desires and technology. This title gathers a snapshot view by researchers in the field of new complexity theories of cities. It features the achievements, criticisms and potentials are reviewed and the implications to planning and urban design are assessed."

Antifragile is an approach formulated by Nassim Nicholas Taleb as a response to an event that has small probabilities with significant impact. This event, known as the black swan, has characteristics that make it impossible for traditional methods to predict its emergence. As an alternative, Taleb presenting antifragile as a replacement. Antifragile is a quality-based approach that tries to assess system vulnerability to determinate if the system concerned had a fragile, robust, or antifragile as quality. The purpose of this article is to introduce the concept of antifragile as a respond to the black swan using asymmetry and non-linearity. Further elaboration of this view is expected to show that there are two shortcomings within the said approach. First shortfall concerned with a difficulty to determinate the quality of system related to the type of black swan perceived. The second shortfall is showed by point a contradiction between antifragile idea and concept of black swan within Taleb previous discourse."
