"ABSTRAKThe results of a computer simulation investigation delineating the limits of resolution, sensitivity, and accuracy of the depth-resolved surface-coil spectroscopy (DRESS), volume-selective excitation (VSE), and image-selected in vivo spectroscopy (ISIS) methods for achieving spatially localized NMR spectroscopy are presented. A computer program, which numerically solves the Bloch equations for variable input parameters, is used to simulate the spatial localization afforded by each technique. Because the numerical solution of the Bloch equations describes the behavior of the bulk magnetization with great precision, the simulations provide an obejective and realistic means of evaluating the performance of the individual localization schemes and reveal nuances and limitations not discussed in the original experimental papers. The results of this computer simulation study should encourage the optimization of localization methodology for use in specific applications."

We define the "axcitability" as the propagaion velocity of an excitation pulse through the tissue, and study a simple FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) model of heart tissue whose excitability changes wit position. The propagation velocity is shown to be a good continuous measure of the excitabillity for both limit cycle and excitable tissues. "

This research examines differences in cognitive activities and final designs among expert designers using object-oriented and procedural design methodologies, and among expert and novice object-oriented designers, when novices have extensive procedural experience. We observed, as predicted by others, a closer alliance of domain and solution spaces in object-oriented design compared to procedural design. Procedural programmers spent a large proportion of their time analyzing the problem domain. In contrast, object-oriented designers defined objects and methods much more quickly and spent more time evaluating their designs through simulation process. Novices resembled object-oriented experts in some ways and procedural experts in others. Their designs had the general shape of the object-oriented experts' designs, but retained some procedural features. Novices were very inefficient at defining object, going through an extensive situation analysis first, in a manner similar to the procedural experts. Some suggestions for instruction are made on the basis of novice object-oriented designers' difficulties."
