"Setiap kebudayaan termasuk Korea Selatan memiliki ciri khas komunikasi nonverbal tersendiri. Komunikasi nonverbal terdiri dari beberapa jenis, salah satunya adalah gestur. Sebuah gestur yang sama dapat memiliki makna yang berbeda tergantung pada kebudayaan-kebudayaan tertentu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bentuk-bentuk gestur khas masyarakat Korea Selatan dan pemaknaannya. Objek penelitian ini adalah proses komunikasi masyarakat Korea Selatan yang diamati melalui tayangan serial televisi atau yang dikenal sebagai drama Korea. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif. Adapun beberapa gestur khas yang berhasil diamati antara lain, membungkuk, berlutut, aegyo, memukul kepala, dan beberapa gestur yang melibatkan gerakan tangan lainnya. Pemaknaan gestur-gestur ini sangat dipengaruhi oleh perbedaan status sosial seseorang. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari perbedaan cara melakukan sebuah gestur dan cara memberikan respon terhadap gestur tersebut. Gestur- gestur yang berhasil diamati memang belum mencakup keseluruhan gestur khas masyarakat Korea Selatan. Kendati demikian penulis berharap penelitian ini tetap dapat memberikan informasi mengenai beberapa gestur khas masyarakat Korea Selatan kepada pembaca.

Each culture including South Korean has their own typical nonverbal communication. There are several types of nonverbal communication such as gesture. A same gesture could have different meaning depends on certain cultures. This paper is aimed to explain South Korean society’s typical gestures and how to interpret them. The object of this paper is South Korean society’s way of communicating which had been observed through their television series, as known as Korean drama. This paper use qualitative method to collect and analysis the data as it is used to present the result of the research. There are several typical gestures that will be explained in this paper such as bowing, kneeling, aegyo, hitting other’s head, and some others hand gestures. The interpretation of these gestures are strongly influenced by social status differences. Those differences can be seen from one's way to do certain gesture and how the other gives respon to that. The gestures that will be explained in this paper are still not enough to take cover for all of South Korean society’s typical gestures indeed. Still I hope that this paper could give necessary information regarding South Korean society’s typical gestures to the readers."
