"Teknologi Voice over Internet Protocol (VoiP) merupakan salah satu teknologi baru yang menggunakan Internet Protocol sebagai infrastruktur transfer data (yang berupa suara). Selama ini transfer suara yang kita lakukan dalam percakapan melalui telepon menggunakan jaringan telepon publik atau yang umum dikenal sebagai Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Salah satu kelebihan teknologi ini adalah VoiP relatif lebih hemat bandwidth karena kemampuan kompresinya. Transfer data melalui IP dapat menghemat biaya pemakaian telepon maupun faksimile dan dapat lebih dikembangkan lagi untuk aplikasi multimedia yang lain. VoiP saat ini terbukti layak diimplementasikan; kegiatan untuk standarisasi, desain terminal dan gateway dan penawaran service yang menggunakan teknologi ini sedang berlanjut saat ini, meskipun masalah teknis dalam transport suara pada jaringan paket dan kompleksitas dalam membangun produk komersil menjadi tantangan hampir semua perusahaan telekomunikasi. Tesis ini merupakan kajian implementasi teknologi VoiP pada perusahaan telekomunikasi di Indonesia seperti PT. Telkom. Fokusnya adalah bagaimana mempersiapkan layanan dan infrastruktur yang akan memanfaatkan teknologi VoiP untuk mendapatkan benefit yang sebesarbesarnya, penerapan konsep yang berorientasi pada kemudahan dalam pengaksesan serta quality of service yang memadai dengan mempertimbangkan issue-issue tentang reliability, scalability, suplementary service, biaya investasi, strategi pemasaran dan regulasi.

Voice over lntf3rnet Protocol (VoiP) technology is one of the new technology that being use to transfer the voice over data network. Traditionally, only the! Public Switching Telephone Network (PSTN) has used, using the circuit network technology. One of tile advantages of the Vol P over the traditional circuit switch technology is the bandwidth compression capability. This compression advantage provides ability for the VoiP technology to transfer the same size of data over a narrow bandwidth compares to the circuit technology, result in a cost saving on the telephone/fax expenses. In addition, this technology can be use further in the new multimedia world. VoiP perceived as the right technolpgy to be implemented. Standardizations, terminal and gateway design and services offers based on VoiP technology are continuing, despite the limitation of the voice quality over the packet network and the complexities on bringing the commercial and innovative services to the market, become the major challenges for service providers. This thesis focus on how Service Providers in Indonesia such as PT Telkom are preparing the VoiP infrastructures to support the upcoming VoiP services and to gain their revenue based on this technology by considering the concepts of easy access, together with the reasonable quality of service and bring the issues such as reliability, scalability, supplementary services, regulation, cost and marketing strategy."
