"Permintaan terhadap material hidrofobik dan superhidrofobik diprediksi akan meningkat 187.61% pada tahun 2024 dari tahun 2015. Material umum yang dapat digunakan sebagai bahan baku material superhidrofobik adalah carbon nanotubes, graphene, dan silica. Dari ketiga bahan baku tersebut silika merupakan bahan baku yang murah dan mudah didapatkan. Silika didapatkan dengan cara menambang pasir dari pantai atau sungai. Pertumbuhan pembangunan infrastruktur berdampak besar terhadap permintaan pasir. Penambangan pasir memiliki dampak buruk seperti pendangkalan sungai, abrasi air laut, dan lain-lain. Untuk mengurangi dampak dari pertambangan pasir maka diperlukan pencarian sumber silika dari tempat lain yang lebih ramah lingkungan. Salah satu sumber silika yang melimpah adalah terak feronikel. Terak feronikel adalah residu sisa dari proses ekstraksi nikel. Terak feronikel mengandung 45.7% SiO2. Penelitian ini menjelaskan proses sintesis silika hidrofobik dari terak feronikel untuk diaplikasikan sebagai campuran untuk pelapisan bitumen. Metode yang digunakan adalah fusi alkali, pelindian air, presipitasi silika, pelindian dengan asam stearat dan media etanol, dan pencampuran silika dengan bitumen. Dalam penelitian ini, hasil sintesis partikel silika hidrofobik memiliki sudut kontak air sebesar 107.558º dengan ukuran partikel silika hidrofobik di antara 2.5 – 27.77 µm dan rata-rata ukuran partikel 9.43 µm.

Hydrophobic and Superhydrophobic material demand growth forecasted will increase 187.61% in 2024. Carbon nanotubes, graphene, and silica are the most common raw material for superhydrophobic material use. Silica is the cheapest and easiest to obtain compared to CNT and graphene. Silica were obtained through sand mining from beaches or rivers. Increase growth in infrastructure construction lead to increase in sand mining operation. Sand mining operation caused negative impact to the environment such as river shallowing, sea water abrasion, etc. Therefore, we need to find other sources of silica that does not cause harm to the environment. Ferronickel slag is one of the other sources that contain substantial amount of silica. Ferronickel slag contain 45.7% SiO2. This research will explain synthesis process of hydrophobic silica from ferronickel slag as additive for bitumen coating. This research consist of 5 process, such as alkaline fusion, water leaching, silica precipitation, stearic acid and ethanol leaching, and mixing of hydrophobic silica and bitumen. In this research, hydrophobic silica particle reach 107.558º contact angle with particle diameter range from 2.5 – 27.77 µm and average particle size 9.43 µm."
