"ABSTRAKFenomena berkembangnya Gated Community yang terjadi di Indonesia sedang menunjukkan gejala pergeseran dari yang berbasis etnis sampai berbasis agama. Konteks tragedi 98, urbanisasi, pertumbuhan perekonomian, kebangkitan Islam, dan kemunculan kelas menengah muslim baru, berimplikasi pada semakin tingginya permintaan perumahan muslim dengan konsep Gated Community. Gated Community merupakan sebuah konsep lingkungan di kelilingi tembok atau pagar dengan akses yang terbatas. Hal ini dianggap sebagai bentuk rasa takut lsquo;fear rsquo; atas kejahatan yang coba diatasi dengan mengontrol sebuah teritori. Tujuan dari penelitian ini dibuat adalah untuk memahami makna dan perilaku penghuni perumahan muslim untuk mengatasi fear yang menjadi preferensi pemilihan tempat tinggal. Etnografi menjadi alat untuk memahami konstruksi pengetahuan ldquo;fear rdquo; yang direproduksi dalam mengontrol ruang terjaga GCs perumahan muslim. Data didapat dari wawancara yang mendalam dengan pengembang maupun penghuninya yang di dukung oleh pengamatan terlibat dan penelusuran literatur. Hasilnya adalah perumahan muslim menjadi ruang aman dalam proses konstruksi sosial yang membentuk identitas muslim perkotaan.

ABSTRACTThe phenomenon of Gated Community development in Indonesia showing of shifting social segregation from ethnic to religious based. The context of the tragedy 98, urbanization, economic growth, the rise of Islam, and the emergence of a new Muslim middle class, have implications for the growing demand for Muslim housing with the concept of a Gated Community. Gated Community GC is an environmental concept surrounded by walls or fences with limited access. This is regarded as a fear of crime that tries to overcome by controlling a territory. The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning and behavior of residents of Muslim housing to counter the fear that becomes the preference for the choice of residence. Ethnography becomes a tool to understand the social construction of muslim space that is reproduced in controlling Muslim housing GCs. Data were obtained from in depth interviews with the developers and their occupants who were supported by the observations involved and the literature search. The result is muslim housing being a safe space in the social construction process that shapes the identity of the urban Muslims."
