"This article deals with systems of transmission of knowledge. The author looks into the kanuragan of the Javanese and its transformation into a modern form, along with the consequences of this transformation. Traditional kanuragan instruction is primarily oral and centers on intermediary roles and social intercourse, and it is conducted in space that is cosmographically meaningful. In contrast, modern individualistic instruction-rooted in early Greek philosophy and events in the European Middle Age-is highly formalized and linked to economic concerns, leading to an individualism with little regard for one's surroundings. The author suggests that the Javanese kanuragan has been partially transformed by this modern system. Thus, the transmission of knowledge is increasingly divorced from the transmission of morals and affect that form the basis of one's actions and social relationships. The author also notes that scholars would gain much from understanding the kanuragan in their efforts to understand current Indonesian Society."

"ABSTRAKTesis ini membahas fungsi dari Samrah dalam masyarakat Betawi dan juga bagaimana proses pewarisannya. Fungsi dari Samrah sebagai hiburan kerap mengalami perubahan dalam pertunjukannya. Samrah adalah kesenian yang semula lengkap pertunjukannya dengan tunil, tari, dan musik. Adanya permasalahan dalam proses transmisi membuat Samrah saat ini hanya dapat dinikmati musiknya saja, unsur lainnya sudah sulit ditemukan karena beberapa faktor yang tidak berjalan dengan semestinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan perspektif tradisi lisan. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan langsung terjun ke lapangan dengan mengikuti setiap pementasan Samrah dan ikut berpartisipasi mulai dari persiapan pertunjukan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah melihat hubungan antara Samrah dengan masyarakatnya dan model transmisinya.

ABSTRACT This thesis discusses the function of Samrah in Betawi society and also how the process of inheritance. The function of Samrah as entertainment often aids in the show. Samrah is the art that was originally complete with tunil performances, dance, and music. The problem in the transfer process makes Samrah currently only accessible to music only, another element was hard to found because some factors are not working properly. This research uses qualitative method with perspective of oral tradition. Data collection is done directly to the field with each Samrah staging and separating from the preparation of the show. The purpose of this study is to look at the relationship between Samrah and his community and the transmission model. "
