"ABSTRAK
Penelitian ini membahas mengenai kemampuan siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas SMA dalam keterampilan menulis, khususnya keterampilan menulis teks naratif. Oleh karena itu, tesis ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana instruksi tugas tersebut dapat mempengaruhi proses pembelajaran siswa. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas Action Research , terdiri atas 2 tahap yang masing-masingnya terdapat 2 kegiatan menulis, yaitu menulis bebas dan menulis dengan kendala constraints . Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa kedua intervensi yang dilakukan memiliki hasil belajar yang berbeda. Penggunaan constraint dapat membantu meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa. Akan tetapi, dalam kegiatan menulis dengan kendala perlu pertimbangan yang baik, agar kendala tersebut dapat memfasilitasi siswa dan tidak menghambat pekerjaan siswa. Secara umum, hasil penelitian ini mendukung gagasan bahwa instruksi tugas yang memberikan kebebasan dapat membantu siswa dalam proses belajar, dan penggunaan kendala yang tepat dapat membantu siswa memperoleh hasil belajar yang lebih baik.

ABSTRACT
This study focuses on the instruction of writing task of high school students, especially in narrative writing skill. The research aims to find out how the instruction of the task affects the students rsquo learning process. By implementing an action research approach consisting of two stages, the results showed better result in constraint used writing rather than free writing. However, in constraints used writing task, considerations in providing thoughtful constraints are needed to facilitate students rsquo learning. In general, the result of this study support the idea that task assignments giving freedom of choice in writing help students in the learning process, and providing appropriate constraints help students achieve even better learning outcomes."
