"This topical collection of chapters examines secular society and the legal protection of religion and belief across Europe, both in general and more nation-specific terms. The expectations of many that religion in modern Europe would be swept away by the powerful current of secularization have not been realised, and today few topics generate more controversy than the complex relationship between religious and secular values. The 'religious/secular' relationship is examined in this book, which brings together scholars from different parts of Europe and beyond to provide insights into the methods by which religion and equivalent beliefs have been, and continue to be, protected in the legal systems and constitutions of European nations. The contributors' chapters reveal that the oft-tumultuous legacy of Europe's relationship with religion still resonates across a continent where legal, political and social contours have been powerfully shaped by faith and religious difference. Covering recent controversies such as the Islamic headscarf, and the presence of the crucifix in school class-rooms, this book will appeal to academics and students in law, human rights and the social sciences, as well as law and policy makers and NGOs in the field of human rights"

""The intersections between culture and human rights are shown to have engaged some of the most heated and controversial debates across international law and theory. As understandings of culture have evolved in recent decades to encompass culture as ways of life, there has been a shift in emphasis from national cultures to cultural diversity within and across states. This has entailed a push to more fully articulate cultural rights within human rights law. This volume provides a taster of the responses by international law, and particularly human rights law, to some of the thorniest, perennial, and ... sometimes violent confrontations and contestations fuelled by culture in relations between individuals, groups, and the state in international society."--Front jacket flap."

"This paper discusses the problem of human rights in an international context in which it often causes conflict of interests among different nations. It turns out that the Human Rights Declaration does not always provide convenient guide to problem of human rights abuse. This paper aims at demonstrating differing views in the international discourse on human rights and the necessity to understand those differing views and issues related to human rights. This is crucial to avoid taking side unwisely."

"Jakarta is one of the areas with high urbanization number and its impacts, so it requires Local Government to control the urbanization to minimize its negative impacts. On the other hand, the rights to freedom of movement and residence throughout the territory of Indonesia are guaranteed by the Law. So, this study becomes important to know how the efforts of Jakarta Provincial Government to control the urbanization as seen in human rights perspective. This study uses a qualitative approach and descriptive method. This paper argues that the urbanization control by Jakarta Local Government with orderly administration approach is not effective to control the urbanization and only created constraints of people movement and this policy violates the right to freedom movement and residence. It further sug¬gests that the orderly administration approach should be replaced by the human rights approach in controlling the urbanization in Jakarta if it is to seek better policy."

Cohen, Andrew Jason
"In this engaging and comprehensive introduction to the topic of toleration, Andrew Jason Cohen seeks to answer fundamental questions, such as: What is toleration? What should be tolerated? Why is toleration important?
Beginning with some key insights into what we mean by toleration, Cohen goes on to investigate what should be tolerated and why. We should not be free to do everythingNmurder, rape, and theft, for clear examples, should not be tolerated. But should we be free to take drugs, hire a prostitute, or kill ourselves? Should our governments outlaw such activities or tolera."
