"The sequencing of the human genome opened a new world of biomarkers. Is it possible to tell by a person's genetic signature how they would respond to a particular drug? his is the dream of "personalized medicine". At the moment as many as half of all drugs do not work for the people who take them. Such pharmacogenomics could also reduce the size and cost of clinical tests by allowing pharma firms to select the most suitable patients. But the reality is rather different. The difficulty lies in proving that they reliably correlete with clinical outcome. Companies that had placed their faith in genomics are now caught in a dilemma: to produce information only or new drugs. As the cost of gene sequencing has fallen, firms have rushed to offer genetic tests directly to consumers, often raising grand expectations. There now seems to be a backlash. Doctors have complained about being bypassed. Most generic tests directly do not provide conclusive evidence of this risk of disease Some academics also remain deeply skeptical about genomics being used in medicine. In addition , personalised medicine would be economic folly for firms who would need to develop a special pill for every patient. Traditionally firms sold conventional one - size - all drugs. Perhaps a better way would be mass customization."

"In this volume, general aspects of biopatent law will be discussed. This involves questions of patentability, including ethical issues and issues of technicality, as well as questions of patent exhaustion in cases were reproducible subject matter, like cells or seeds, is protected. Moreover, active and passive patent strategies are addressed. Further, insight will be given into patent lifetime management and additional protective measures, like supplementary protection certificates and data exclusivity. Here, strategies are discussed how market exclusivity can be extended as long as possible, which is particularly important for biopharmaceutical drugs, which create high R&D costs."

"This book arises from the NATO Advanced Study Institute “Technological Innovations in Detection and Sensing of CBRN Agents and Ecological Terrorism” held in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova in June 2010. It comprises a variety of invited contributions by highly experienced educators, scientists, and industrialists, and is structured to cover important aspects of the field that include developments in chemical-biological, and radiation sensing, synthesis and processing of sensors, and applications of sensors in detecting/monitoring contaminants introduced/dispersed inadvertently or intentionally in air, water, and food supplies. The book emphasizes nanomaterials and nanotechnology based sensing and also includes a section on sensing and detection technologies that can be applied to information security. Finally, it examines regional, national, and international policies and ethics related to nanomaterials and sensing. "
