"Learning through doing is the foundation of this book, which allows readers to explore case studies as well as expository material. The book provides a practical guide to the numerical solution of linear and nonlinear equations, differential equations, optimization problems, and eigenvalue problems. It treats standard problems and introduces important variants such as sparse systems, differential-algebraic equations, constrained optimization, Monte Carlo simulations, and parametric studies. Stability and error analysis is emphasized, and the MATLAB algorithms are grounded in sound principles of software design and in the understanding of machine arithmetic and memory management."

"ABSTRAK
The range of instruments for in-line process and quality control for rapid at-line measurements in the food industry has expanded rapidly in recent years. Part I of this paper describes instruments for the control of chemical, biochemical and immunological determinands. Chemical sensors and biosensors, including semiconductor, acoustic and optical devices as well as direct amperometric enzyme electrodes, offer considerable potential for the monitoring of food composition and the prediction of microbial and rancid degradation. The water activity of foods is one of the parameters used to predict their stability during storage; instruments employed for the measurements of the equilibrium relative humidity of foods are described. Compositional analysis with infrared, microwave and ultrasonic techniques offers the advantage of non-invasive hygienic in-line monitoring. Based on a knowledge of the dielectric and acoustic properties of foods, these techniques can be applied to a range of in-line analysis tasks. Impedimetric techniques are gaining ground in rapid microbial assaying."

"The general principles of the scientific method, which are applicable across all of the sciences, are essential for perspective, productivity, and innovation. These principles include deductive and inductive logic, probability, parsimony, and hypothesis testing, as well as science?s presuppositions, limitations, ethics, and bold claims of rationality and truth. The implicit contrast is with specialized techniques confined to a given discipline, such as DNA sequencing in biology. Neither general principles nor specialized techniques can substitute for one another, but rather the winning combination for scientists is mastery of both. The purposes of this book are to enhance perspective on science by drawing insights from the humanities, and to increase productivity by fostering a deep understanding of the general principles of scientific method. The examples and case studies span the physical, biological, and social sciences; include applications in agriculture, engineering, and medicine; and also explore science?s interrelationships with disciplines in the humanities such as philosophy and law. This book engages a great diversity of viewpoints on science, both historical and contemporary, and responds by affirming science?s rationality. Informed by position papers on science from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, National Academy of Sciences, and National Science Foundation, this book aligns with a distinctively mainstream vision of science. It is an ideal resource for anyone undertaking a systematic study of scientific method for the first time, from undergraduates to professionals in both the sciences and the humanities."

Elias, Carlos
"In this controversial essay, Carlos Elias addresses the worldwide phenomenon that is threatening the scientific and economic progress of Western countries. The rise and influence of magic and irrationality in the media, in social networks and at universities is a disturbing phenomenon: many Western students no longer want to pursue STEM (Science, Technologies, Engineering, and Math) careers.
This lucid and well-written book addresses one of the key issues of public debate: the deteriorating state of science in Western countries and their governments, and its rise in Asian countries. The author compares two distinct models: the Spanish or Latin model, which closed the door on science with the Counter-Reformation, and that employed by a second group of countries where science was encouraged. Elias suggests that a similar development could now be taking place between Western countries (where the press, television and social science academics are becoming increasingly critical towards science) and Asia, where most prime ministers (and other politicians) are scientists or engineers.
