"Themes that are highlighted include :
  • the role of language : the models developed for engineering design have resulted in new ways of talking about technological systems
  • communities of practice : related to the previous point, particular engineering communities have particular ways of sharing and developing knowledge
  • graphical (re)presentation : engineers have developed many ways of reducing quite complex mathematical models to more simple representations
  • reification : highly abstract mathematical models are turned into ‘objects’ that can be manipulated almost like components of a physical system
  • machines : not only the currently ubiquitous digital computer, but also older analogue devices, slide rules, physical models, wind tunnels and other small-scale simulators, as well as mechanical, electrical and electronic analogue computers
  • mathematics and modelling as a bridging tool between disciplines

"This book constitutes the refereed post-proceedings of the International Conference on Mathematical Modeling and Computational Physics, MMCP 2011, held in Stará Lesná, Slovakia, in July 2011. The 41 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. They are organized in topical sections on mathematical modeling and methods, numerical modeling and methods, computational support of the experiments, computing tools, and optimization and simulation."

"Learning through doing is the foundation of this book, which allows readers to explore case studies as well as expository material. The book provides a practical guide to the numerical solution of linear and nonlinear equations, differential equations, optimization problems, and eigenvalue problems. It treats standard problems and introduces important variants such as sparse systems, differential-algebraic equations, constrained optimization, Monte Carlo simulations, and parametric studies. Stability and error analysis is emphasized, and the MATLAB algorithms are grounded in sound principles of software design and in the understanding of machine arithmetic and memory management."

"Mathematical Models in Biology is an introductory book for readers interested in biological applications of mathematics and modeling in biology. A favorite in the mathematical biology community, it shows how relatively simple mathematics can be applied to a variety of models to draw interesting conclusions. Connections are made between diverse biological examples linked by common mathematical themes. A variety of discrete and continuous ordinary and partial differential equation models are explored. Although great advances have taken place in many of the topics covered, the simple lessons contained in Mathematical Models in Biology are still important and informative.
Shortly after the publication of Mathematical Models in Biology, the genomics revolution turned Mathematical Biology into a prominent area of interdisciplinary research. With this new millennium, biologists have discovered that mathematics is not only useful, but indispensable! As a result, there has been much resurgent interest in, and a huge expansion of, the fields collectively called mathematical biology. This book serves as a basic introduction to concepts in deterministic biological modeling."

"When we use a camera, we want the recorded image to be a faithful representation of the scene that we see, but every image is more or less blurry. In image deblurring, the goal is to recover the original, sharp image by using a mathematical model of the blurring process. The key issue is that some information on the lost details is indeed present in the blurred image, but this hidden information can be recovered only if we know the details of the blurring process. Deblurring Images: Matrices, Spectra, and Filtering describes the deblurring algorithms and techniques collectively known as spectral filtering methods, in which the singular value decompositionr a similar decomposition with spectral properties as used to introduce the necessary regularization or filtering in the reconstructed image. The concise MATLAB implementations described in the book provide a template of techniques that can be used to restore blurred images from many applications.

"Detailed hints for the implementation of the various algorithms enable readers to write their own flow simulation program from scratch. The variety of applications is shown in several simulation results, including 93 black-and-white and 17 color illustrations.
Moreover, after reading this book, readers should be able to understand more enhanced algorithms of computational fluid dynamics and to apply their new knowledge of modeling, discretization, parallelization, and visualization to other scientific fields, where numerical simulation has established itself, in addition to theoretical investigations and practical experiments, as a new path for uncovering the laws of nature. Among these fields are the examination of elastic solids, combustion, melting and coating processes, and crystal growth, as well as weather prediction."

"This monograph offers a systematic quantitative approach to the analysis, evaluation, and design of electoral systems. Today, electoral reform is of concern to newborn democracies as well as many old ones. The authors use mathematical models and automatic procedures, when possible, to solve some of the problems that arise in the comparison of existing systems as well as in the construction of new ones. One distinctive feature of the book is the emphasis on single- and multiple-criteria optimization methods. This powerful tool kit will help political researchers evaluate and choose an appropriate electoral system.
A general formal model is included as well as a coding system to describe, identify, and classify electoral systems. Evaluation criteria and the corresponding performance indicators are discussed. A treatment of electoral formulas as algorithms to minimize actual cost functions or disproportionality indexes is also included. Neutral automatic procedures for political districting are presented, and the process of electoral reform is analyzed from historical and political points of view.
Targeted toward mathematically trained scientists (applied mathematicians, operations researchers, and statisticians) and written in clear and simple language, this monograph is largely accessible to political and social scientists as well. A basic knowledge of elementary set theory and integer programming and graph theory is advisable, although not essential, to fully appreciate some technical features."

"This book introduces mathematicians to real applications from physiology. Using mathematics to analyze physiological systems, the authors focus on models reflecting current research in cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology. In particular, they present models describing blood flow in the heart and the cardiovascular system, as well as the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide through the respiratory system and a model for baroreceptor regulation.
Applied Mathematical Models in Human Physiology is the only book available that analyzes up-to-date models of the physiological system at several levels of detail. Some are simple real-time models that can be directly used in larger systems, while others are more detailed reference models that show the underlying physiological mechanisms and provide parameters for and validation of simpler models. The book also covers two-dimensional modeling of the fluid dynamics in the heart and its ability to pump, and includes a discussion of modeling wave-propagation throughout the systemic arteries.
The models presented can be used as case studies in courses on mathematical modeling or as an inspiration for the study and development of physiological models. The first two chapters of the book provide an excellent introduction to the physiologic concepts necessary for understanding the modeling assumptions and methodologies. The remaining chapters describe six different models of the cardiovascular and pulmonary system. Each model is introduced by a case study and can be studied individually."

"The calculation of short circuit currents is a central task for power system engineers; they are essential parameters for the design of electrical equipment and installations, the operation of power systems and the analysis of outages and faults.
Short Circuit Currents gives an overview of the components within power systems with respect to the parameters needed for short circuit current calculation. It also explains how to use a system of symmetrical components to analyse different types of short circuits in power systems. The thermal and electromagnetic effects of short circuit currents on equipment and installations, short-time interference problems and measures for the limitation of short circuit currents are also discussed. Detailed calculation procedures and typical data of equipment are provided in a separate chapter for easy reference, and worked examples are included throughout."
