Abstrak :
The importance of conservation is growing each year, with increasing concerns over the destruction of biodiversity and the rising awareness of ecosystem services generating new debates on the human-nature relationship. This compact overview integrates the process, theory and practice of conservation for a broad readership, from students to practitioners. Taking a global perspective, it uses examples from around the world to show how general themes, patterns and drivers acting at different scales come together to cause problems at the local level"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstrak :
Urban environments are expanding globally as the number and proportion of humans that live in cities continue to increase. The discipline of urban ecology is also expanding as interest surges in the ecological impacts of urbanization and the diverse ways in which urban environments can affect their human and non-human residents -- This book provides an accessible introduction to urban ecology, using established ecological theory to identify generalities in the complexity of urban environments. Engaging yet scholarly, it examines the biophysical processes of urbanization and how these work together to influence (a) the characteristics of urban environments in developed and developing countries, and (b) the dynamics of urban populations, communities and ecosystems. With a strong international focus, it also explores the ecology of humans in cities and discusses practical strategies for conserving biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem services in urban environments. Finally, it argues that existing ecological theory is appropriate for understanding the ecology of urban environments across all levels of organization, from individual organisms to entire ecosystems; effective science and management need not wait on a new theory of urban ecology -- Designed as a text book for upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate students, Ecology of Urban Environments will also be an invaluable resource for researchers and policy-makers in the urban sphere --Book Jacket.

...... Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) are elusive animals therefore causing difficulties for population estimation in wild when using invasive methods. So that, non-invasive method using dung samples can be collected to conduct genetic analysis. Census in Way Kambas National Park (WKNP) using dung count method in 2002 produced population estimates of 180 elephants. Whereas genetic survey using microsatellite in this study estimated a total of 139 elephants inhabiting this area. Average allele variance from 13 loci is 2.92 alleles per locus, while allele frequencies range from 0.004--1.000 and quite low mean heterozygosity that is 0.4060 (+ 0.0116). This results indicate that WKNP elephant population have quite low genetic variance compared with other asian elephant. Genetic data obtained from this study may play important role in supporting elephant population in WKNP, such as law enforcement, land-use planning, and re-stocking new individual into thipopulation.
