ABSTRACTKhruba (venerable monks) have consistently played a meaningful role in local Buddhist communities of Northern Thai culture for generations. While today's khruba continue to represent themselves as followers of Khruba Siwichai and Lan Na Buddhism, in fact over the past three decades they have flourished by adopting heterogeneous beliefs and practices in the context of declining influence of the sangha and popular Buddhism. In order to respond to social and cultural transformations and to fit in with different expectations of people, modern khruba construct charisma through different practices besides the obvious strictness in dhamma used to explain the source of khruba's charisma in Lan Na Buddhist history. The ability to integrate local Buddhist traditions with the spirit of capitalism-consumerism and gain a large number of followers demonstrates that khruba is still a meaningful concept that plays a crucial role in modern Buddhist society, particularly in Thailand. By employing concepts of charisma, production of translocalities, and popular Buddhism and prosperity religion, it can be argued that khruba is steeped in local knowledge, yet the concept has never been linear and static. Modern khruba can be interpreted and consumed in many ways by diverse groups of people. This is also considered a key success of modern khruba and their proliferation during the past three decades in Thailand. Data were collected in 2015-16 through in-depth interviews and participatory observation as part of the author's PhD dissertation at Chiang Mai University, Thailand."

"Following Heonik Kwon, this article explores the social and cultural underpinnings of the Cold War (and Cambodia’s stance of neutrality in relation to it) as illustrated through the life of a colorful Cambodian monk, Dharmawara Mahathera. Long resident in India, Dharmawara became a confidant of Norodom Sihanouk as the latter negotiated independence and Cambodia’s new geopolitical realities. Dharmawara was one point of connection between Sihanouk and India at the time Sihanouk was drawn to a position of neutrality and to the Non-Aligned Movement associated with Jawaharlal Nehru and Zhou Enlai, and his story illuminates some of the cultural interface underlying the politics. He would assume a profile in emerging institutions of international Buddhism, such as the World Fellowship of Buddhists, which in their own way related to developing geopolitics. He subsequently attracted the attention of American diplomats in Cambodia in ways that illustrate something of how the Cold War came to be negotiated on the ground. His tensions with the Cambodian monastic hierarchy help us better understand the latter’s role at a historical conjuncture. I argue that Dharmawara helps us understand Sihanouk’s emerging philosophy of “Buddhist socialism.”"

"Penelitian ini mencoba memaparkan aksi gerakan Kaum Sangha di Vietnam yang memicu aksi protes dan penggulingan pemerintahan Presiden Ngo Dinh Diem dari kekuasaan. Paparan dimulai dengan menjelaskan pengaruh gagasan pembaharuan Buddhisme dari berbagai negara Buddha terutama China terhadap gerakan Kaum Sangha di Vietnam. Peran Kaum Sangha yang terutama adalah memberikan pencerahan agama kepada setiap orang di manapun berada. Namun pada masa pemerintahan Presiden Ngo Dinh Diem, kebebasan untuk beribadah tidak diberikan kepada penganut Buddha, hanya Katolik yang mendapat tempat utama. Pada akhirnya penelitian ini mengungkapkan tiga hal. Pertama, Presiden Ngo Dinh Diem tidak memberikan kebebasan beragama kepada penganut Buddha. Kedua, aksi bakar diri Thich Quang Duc pada tahun 1963 memunculkan dukungan dari masyarakat dunia, untuk memaksa Amerika Serikat berlaku keras kepada Ngo Dinh Diem. Ketiga, ketidakpuasan Kaum Sangha terhadap pemerintahan menjadi dasar legitimasi aksi kudeta menggulingkan Ngo Dinh Diem dari kekuasaan.
This research tries to explain the Sangha’s movement in Vietnam which triggered protest action and down falling Ngo Dinh Diem’s authority as a president. The description begins with an explanation about the effect of Chinese centered Buddhism revival idea on Sangha’s movement. The Sangha’s main role was giving religious enlightenment to everyone. Unfortunately, religious liberty wasn’t given to the Buddhist because of the only priority given to the Catholics. Ultimately the research reveals of three things. First, Ngo Dinh Diem as a president didn’t give freedom worship to the Buddhist. Then, self immolation done by Thich Quang Duc in 1963 had created world supports to have USA determine a harder attitude toward Ngo Dinh Diem. And the last, Sangha’s discontentment toward government became legitimation of coup d’état on overthrowing Ngo Dinh Diem’s power."

"Pencahayaan adalah salah satu elemen terpenting yang dibutuhkan oleh manusia. Dengan cahaya kita dapat mengenali warna, bentuk, ukuran, serta dapat melihat dengan jelas dengan bantuan cahaya. Di bidang tata cahaya, pencahayaan tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai penerangan ruang melainkan dapat menghadirkan impresi ruang tertentu agar dapat menghadirkan lingkungan untuk mendukung kegiatan yang dilakukan di ruang tersebut. Ruang sakral adalah sebuah ruang yang mengandung nilai kesakralan di dalamnya. Cahaya merupakan salah satu elemen pembentuk ruang sakral dengan ruang sakral sendiri adalah ruang yang berfungsi untuk mengakomodasikan sebagai wadah untuk melakukan kegiatan yang bersifat kontemplasi. Cahaya dianggap sebagai ekspresi spiritualisme yang dapat menghadirkan dampak emosional dan impresi ruang yang dapat mempengaruhi dampak psikologis saat berkegiatan. Vihara merupakan ruang sakral Buddhisme yang berfungsi sebagai tempat ibadah umat Buddhisme untuk memberikan penghormatan kepada Buddha sebagai sosok yang dihormati pada aliran ini. Adanya kegiatan religius seperti berdoa dan melafal Sutra mempengaruhi penerapan pencahayaan artifisialnya pada Vihara agar dapat menghadirkan lingkungan yang dapat mendukung kegiatan tersebut. Kenyamanan Visual merupakan aspek penting ketika menerapkan pencahayaan artifisial pada sebuah ruang. Sebuah impresi ruang yang memberikan kenyamanan visual diharapkan dapat menjadi lingkungan yang dapat menghadirkan dampak-dampak tertentu yang akan mendukung melakukan kegiatan tersebut
Light is one of the architectural elements needed by humans. We can recognize color, shape, size, and see clearly with the help of light. In lighting design, lighting does not only play a role as room lighting, and yet creates certain impressions of space in order to create an environment to support the activities. Sacred space is a space that contains sacred values in it. Light is one of the elements of sacred space. sacred space itself is a space that accommodated as a place for contemplation. Light is an expression of spiritualism that can bring emotional impact and the impression of space that affects the psychological impact toward the activities. Buddhist Monastery is a Buddhist sacred space that serves as a place of worship for Buddha as a respected figure in Buddhism. Religious activities such as praying and chanting Sutra affect the artificial lighting in Monastery in order to provide an environment that supports these activities. Visual Comfort is an substansial aspect when applying artificial lighting in space. An impression of space that provides visual comfort is expected to become an environment that brings certain impacts that will support these activities."
