"Predictive theories of phenomena involving phase change with applications in engineering are investigated in this volume, e.g. solid-liquid phase change, volume and surface damage, and phase change involving temperature discontinuities. Many other phase change phenomena such as solid-solid phase change in shape memory alloys and vapor-liquid phase change are also explored. Modeling is based on continuum thermo-mechanics. This involves a renewed principle of virtual power introducing the power of the microscopic motions responsible for phase change. This improvement yields a new equation of motion related to microscopic motions, beyond the classical equation of motion for macroscopic motions. The new theory sensibly improves the phase change modeling. For example, when warm rain falls on frozen soil, the dangerous black ice phenomenon can be comprehensively predicted. In addition, novel equations predict the evolution of clouds, which are themselves a mixture of air, liquid water and vapor."

However, this book approach is mainly based on the application of analysis methods (the method of operator identities, integral equations theory, dual systems, integrable equations) to probability theory (Levy processes, M. "Futures prices series CPO (crude palm oil) COMMEX Malaysia sepanjang 20 tahun (23 Okt 1980 — 31 Mar 2000) menunjukkan distribusi yang tidak normal (leptokurtis), memiliki pola autokorelasi yang sangat lambat menuju nol, dan tampak memiliki suatu sikius nonperiodik. Penyimpangan dan normalitas dapat merupakan simtom adanya proses nonilnier dinamis.Pengujian ARCH standar dengan LM Test menunjukkan adanya efek ARCH. Tetapi pola autokorelasi residual kuadrat dan semua frekwensi time series yang diteliti (bulanan, mingguan, dan harian) seluruh dengan sangat lambat dan tidak teratur, dan keadaan ini bukanlah perilaku dan proses ARCH. Proses ARCH umumnya memiliki unconditional third moment sama dengan nol, yaitu distribusi yang simetris, tetapi semua time series dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan skewness yang positif (positively skewed).Model GARCH(1,1) mendrikan bahwa unconditional second moment pada time series adalah tidak terhingga. Tetapi Dickey-Fuller Test dan Philips-Perron Test semuanya menyimpulkan bahwa time series adalah stasioner dengan nilai rata-rata dan variansi yang terhingga. Sehingga model GARCH(1,1) juga kurang cocok merepresentasikan prices series CPO COMMEX Malaysia.Komoditi minyak kelapa sawit (palm oil) dalam perdagangan minyak nabati dunia dewasa ini menduduki urutan kedua setelah minyak kedelai (soybean oil). Malaysia tercatat sebagai produsen CPO (crude palm oil) terbesar di dunia, kontribusinya adalah 49,7 % dan total produksi CPO dunia. Minyak sawit dan minyak inti sawit bagi Malaysia merupakan penghasil devisa terbesar setelah minyak. Sekarang ini Malaysia mengekspor 99,8 % dari minyak sawitnya dalam bentuk produk-produk rafinasi dan fraksinasì. Industri sawit di Malaysia dikelola dengan sangat baik dan ditunjang oleh rencana pembangunan 5 tahun Malaysia.Mempertimbangkan hal-hal di atas, maka pergerakan harga CPO seharusnya ada unsur deterministiknya tidak sekedar pergerakan yang random. Juga diharapkan adanya suatu siklus pergerakan harga CPO yang berkaitan dengan faktor-faktor deterministik tersebut. Dalam karya akhir ini penulis bertujuan membuktikan eksistensi deterministic chaos dalam future prices CPO COMMEX Malaysia.Proses chaotic dapat menunjukkan perilaku stokastik yang dibangkitkan oleh suatu sistem deterministik. Karena dinamika yang teramati tampak seperti proses random, maka metoda konvensional akan cenderung menyimpulkan proses tersebut sebagai random walk.Sistem nonlinear dinamis tidak menghasilkan suatu solusi optimal tunggal, ia menghasilkan suati ruang kemungkinan solusi berganda (multiple possible solutions), sebingga tidak berlaku konsep equlibrium statis. Sistem nonlinear dinamis merupakan suatu time-dependent feedback mechanism, dengan demikian sistem harus dipandang sebagai proses yang memillki suatu memory, bukannya suatu proses yang independent.Karakteristlk chaos yang penting adalah adanya attractor berdimensi fractal (noninteger). Algoritma yang dikembangkan oleh Grassberger & Procaccia mengestimasi nilal fractal dimension ini dengan correlation dimension. Karakteristik penting lainnya yang dapat menjelaskan perilaku deterministic chaos adalah maximum Lyapunov exponent yang bertanda position. Penulis menggunakan algoritrna Wolf untuk menghitung maximum Lyapunov exponent secara numerik."
