"Disertasi ini membahas Representasi Al Qaeda, Strategi naratif Lawrence Wright dalam Narasi Apologi The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 911. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menunjukkan strategi naratif yang membangun representasi Al Qaeda dan memperlihatkan aspek retorika (pathos, ethos, logos) yang mengonstruksi apologi melalui pendekatan representasi Stuart Hall dan retorika Kenneth Burke. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa Al Qaeda direpresentasikan sebagai sebuah identitas yang ambigu melalui representasi tokoh-tokoh serta tindakan-tindakan mereka: di satu pihak TLT membela dan memperlihatkan upaya pemahaman dengan menyampaikan sebab-sebab tindakan radikal, di pihak lain mengukuhkan citra Islam yang negatif seperti dimitoskan oleh Barat. Representasi identitas Al Qaeda juga dikonstruksi oleh sikap-sikap AS melalui kebijakan terhadap Timur Tengah dan dunia Muslim. Aspek retorika menimbulkan empati dan menyampaikan alasan-alasan yang melatarbelakangi tindakan Al Qaeda sehingga teks ini terlihat membela Al Qaeda. Dengan demikian dapat dikatakan bahwa TLT merupakan narasi apologi yang juga ditunjang oleh teknik jurnalisme sastrawi, dan menampilkan "kenyataan" dengan memberikan "suara" pada tokoh-tokoh marjinal sehingga memberikan kesan nyata yang berdampak pada semakin dekatnya jarak antara teks dengan pembaca. Apologi dalam TLT ditunjukkan pula oleh representasi tokoh-tokoh sebagai korban dalam alur pengkhianatan, dehumanisasi, dan penghinaan terhadap tokoh oleh penguasa Mesir dan AS. Namun demikian, dalam TLT ditemukan pula bias ideologi pengarang sebagai orang Amerika yang terlihat dari penggunaan jargonjargon Barat dalam mendefinisikan Islam dan Al Qaeda dari perspektif Barat.

This dissertation discusses the Representation of Al Qaeda and Narrative Strategies in Lawrence Wright's Narrative Apologetic, The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. The purpose of this study is to show narrative strategies in the representation of Al Qaeda and rhetorical aspects (pathos, ethos, logos) in constructing aspects of apology by using representation theory of Stuart Hall and Kenneth Burke's rhetoric. The results show that Al Qaeda represented as a complex identity in the representation of the characters and their actions: on the one hand TLT defends Al Qaeda by understanding the causes of radical actions, on the other hand it confirms the negative image of Islam in the Western myth. The identity of Al Qaeda is also constructed by the United States policies towards the Middle East and the Muslim world. Aspects of rhetoric raise empathy and convey the reasons behind the actions of Al Qaeda so that the text tends to defend Al Qaeda. The narrative apologetic in TLT is supported by literary journalism techniques, portraying the "reality" by giving "voice" to the marginalized figures that give a real impression in proximity between the text and the reader. The aspects of apology in TLT are also indicated by the representation of the characters as victims in the plot of betrayal, dehumanization, and humiliation by the Egyptian and the United States authorities. Nevertheless, The author's ideological bias as an American is revealed in the use of western jargon in defining Islam and Al Qaeda from a Western perspective."

"Retorika mengajarkan teknik pemakaian bahasa yang elegan dan persuasif baik lisan maupun tulisan. Retorika modern bertolak dari beberapa prinsip dasar yang salah satunya adalah mengenal dan menguasai bermacam-macam gaya bahasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan penggunaan gaya bahasa tausiah Ustaz Yusuf Mansyur yang berjudul Kun Fayakun. Metode yang digunakan adalah penelitian kualitatif yang bersifat deskriptif. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa dokumen. Sumber data dokumen yaitu rekaman tausiah Kun Fayakun yang diunggah di Youtube. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan gaya bahasa dalam tausiah tersebut adalah sebagai berikut: Gaya bahasa Betawi, seperti: dateng, iye, elu, dan laper; Gaya bahasa percakapanyang digunakan pada keseluruhan tausiah. Gaya bahasa mulia dan bertenaga (nada suara rendah, ada suara tinggi, dan memanjangkan pelafalan kata); Berbagai gaya bahasa repetisi (epizeuksis, anafora, anadikplosis, mesodiplosis); Gaya bahasa parabola/parabel; Gaya analogi yang panjang; Gaya bahasa pertanyaan retoris; Gaya bahasa hiperbol; Gaya bahasa personifikasi; Penggunaan humor; Gaya bahasa antiklimaks; dan Gaya Bahasa Klimaks."

"This study discussed about types and functions of interpersonal metadiscourse markers in newspaper article opinion. Interpersonal metadiscourse holds significant role in writing, especially in opinion article, since it reflects writer’s position towards both the content of text and reader. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, and the data are taken from opinion articles in The Jakarta Post online, an Indonesian English newspaper. The results of the study suggest that the types of interpersonal metadiscourse markers, such as hedges, certainty markers, attributors, attitude markers, and commentaries are used in the opinion articles. . The results also reveal that the types of markers hold some specific functions in the texts. Hedges help the writers withhold their opinion, while certainty markers function to emphasize it. Attributors function to support the writers’ arguments and attitude markers express their attitudes towards the text and readers. Finally, commentaries help them to build relationship with their readers."

"Sebagai jenis film yang merepresentasikan kenyataan, film dokumenter memiliki kemampuan untuk mempengaruhi dan mengubah pandangan orang yang menyaksikannya. Sudah banyak contoh film dokumenter yang berhasil menjadi katalisator bagi gerakan sosial yang pada akhirnya mendorong perubahan sosial. Jurnal ini bertujuan untuk menggali aspek-aspek yang mempengaruhi sebuah film dokumenter hingga dapat mendorong perubahan sosial dengan studi kasus film The Invisible War. Baik itu melihatnya sebagai dokumenter aktivisme yang bertujuan untuk mengintervensi proses perubahan dengan memproduksi dan mendistribusi teks dokumenter, atau sebagai teks kultural yang memiliki retorika yang kuat.

As a type of film that represents the real life, a documentary has the ability to influence and change those who watch it. There have been numerous documentaries that have succeeded in being a catalyst for social movements which also stimulates social changes. This journal aims to seek various aspects in a documentary which drives social changes in a case study of a documentary called The Invisible War. We will see the case as an activist documentary that aims to intervene the process of change by producing and distributing documentary text, or as a cultural text that has a powerful rhetoric."

"ABSTRAKThis paper discusses strategies of appropriation of narrative heritage in literate and narrative histories on the island of Kisar. It shows that notwithstanding their sometimes literate characteristics, storytelling in competitive contexts still follows strategies that are typical for oral performances. This paper questions in how far literate and narrative historiographies can and ought to be separated from each other in Southwest Maluku.
