"This cross-sectional study was conducted on 204, 60-75 years old free-living elderly, who were randomly selected from 2 suhvillages of Johar Baru, Jakarta Pusat. The overall health, food and biochemical nutrient status of the elderly were poor. Energy intake was law and 53.9 percent of the subjects had energy intake <2/3 of the RDI. The prevalence of chronic energy deficiency (BMI < 18 .5 kg/rn2) was 26.6 percent More than 75 percent of the elderly had iron and vitamin BI intakes < 2/3 of the RDL Using WHO criteria, the overall prevalence of anemia was 28.9 percent and the elderly females were most affected than the elderly males. Low vitamin Br status (ETK stimulation X14 percent), was found in 64.4 percent of the subjects Low biochemical status of vitamins B12, and A were 8.8 and 5.4 percent, respectively. Folate status was adequate as only 2.9 percent of the elderly had low RBCfolate levels.
Intakes of vitamins B, and B12 were related with their biochemical nutrient levels Diseases was a risk factor to low thiamin status but increased RBC folate. Widowhood and less than 6 years schooling were associated with low Hb and serum retina concentrations in elderly males BMI r 18.5 kg/nn was associated with low Hb and RBC folate concentrations. Subjects of household with per capita income less than Rp 41,200.00 had the highest prevalence of anemia compared with subjects of households with higher per capita income Low vitamin B12 status was associated with low Hb while serum vitamin B12 was positively associated with RBC folate."

"Perkenankanlah saya terlebih dahulu memanjatkan puji syukur kepada Tuhan yang Masa Esa atas rahmat dan karunia-Nya hingga upacara pengukuhan saya sebagai Guru Besar Tetap dalam lhnu Gizi di Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Indonesia dapat terselenggara pada hari ini. Saya ucapkan terima kasih kepada para hadirin sekalian yang telah memberikan perhatian dan meluangkan waktu untuk menghadiri pengukuhan saya.
Pada tahun ini kita akan mengakhiri Pembangunan Jangka Panjang Tahap I (PJPT-I) dan akan memulai PJPT II pada tahun depan yaitu awal era tinggal landas. Tujuan utama era tinggal landas pembangunan nasional ini adalah pengembangan sumberdaya manusia yang berkualitas tinggi. Salah satu upaya di bidang kesehatan yang mempunyai dampak besar terhadap peningkatan kualitas sumberdaya manusia tersebut, adalah upaya peningkatan gizi masyakarat. Kiranya wajar kalau pada kesempatan ini saya memilih judul:
Peranan Perguruan Tinggi dalam Upaya Perbaikan Gizi di Indonesia
Masalah gizi telah diidentifikasi di Indonesia sebelum Perang Dunia II. Setelah Perang Dunia II yaitu setelah kemerdekaan, sekitar tahun 1950-1965, beberapa daerah di Indonesia mengalami krisis pangan, busung lapar, 3-5% anak-anak menderita Kurang Kalori Protein berat dan pendarita Kwashiorkor serta Marasmus mudah ditemukan di bangsal-bangsal rumah sakit.
Usaha pemerintah untuk menanggulangi masalah gizi telah lama dilakukan di Indonesia. Ini tercermin pada program-program sebelum dan selama PJPT-I. Pada tahun lima puluhan dibentuk Panitia Negara Perbaikan Menu Makanan Rakyat, dibangun Lembaga Makanan Rakyat dan pada tahun 1963 diadakan Applied Nutrition Program, yang kemudian dikenal sebagai Usaha Perbaikan Gizi Keluarga (UPGK). Dalam Repelita I (1969-1974) dan Repelita II (1974-1979) pembangunan sektor pertanian serta produksi pangan mendapat prioritas, Nutritional Surveillance System/Sistem Kewaspadaan Pangan dan Gizi (SKPG) dirintis dalam bentuk Pilot Project pada tahun 1979. Pilot Project ini berkembang menjadi Sistem Isyarat Dini dan Intervensi (SIDI)/Early Warning Information and Intervension System yang kemudian menjadi Timely Warning System. Selanjutnya salah satu tujuan utama Repelita III adalah pengembangan UPGK hingga mencakup 75% desa yang tersebar di 27 propinsi. Dalam Repelita IV program perbaikan gizi merupakan bagian dari program program bidang kesehatan, pertanian, pembangunan daerah pedesaan serta kependudukan, sedangkan dalam Repelita terakhir PJPT-I (1989-1994) upaya perbaikan pangan dan gizi dikaitkan dengan peningkatan kualitas hidup penduduk.
Ternyata PJPT-I berhasil dan keberhasilannya dalam bidang pertumbuhan ekonomi, perkembangan bidang pertanian, keluarga berencana serta penunman angka kematian bayi telah mengubah keadaan pangan dan gizi di Indonesia. Dan pengimpor beras nomor satu di dunia, Indonesia menjadi negara swasembada pangan dan prevalensi penyakit-penyakit kurang gizi utama sekitar tahun 1990 lebih rendah jika dibandingkan dengan sekitar tahun 1980; penyakit Kurang Kalori Protein dari 29,9% menjadi 10,48%, Kurang Vitamin A (KVA) dari 1,4% menjadi 0,7%, Gangguan Akibat Kekurangan Iodium (GAKI) dari 37,2% menjadi 23,2% dan Anemia Gizi dari 70% menjadi 55%. Tetapi juga diidentifikasi gizi lebih di kelompok masyarakat tertentu.
Keberhasilan PJPT-I dalam upaya perbaikan gizi tidak lepas dari pendekatan sistem yang dipakai serta perkembangan kelembagaan gizi di Indonesia."

"Ruang Lingkup dan Cara Penelitian : Telah banyak dilaporkan tentang malnutrisi dan faktor terjadinya pada pasien hemodialisis. Penyebab yang paling sering adalah asupan makanan terutamaenergi dan protein yang inadekuat. Ada anggapan yang menyatakan bahwa status klinis dan status nutrisi banyak berperon pada asupan tersebut. Penilaian asupan makanan pada pasien hemodialisis biasa dilakukan pada hari antara HD. Telah dilakukan suatu penelitian mengenai penilaian status nutrisi pada 32 responden pasien hemodialisis yang secara klinis stabil, dibagi atas kelompok HD selang 1, 2, dan 3 hari berturut-turut menjadi sebanyak 7, 14 dan 11 responden.
Hasil dan Kesimpulan : Antara ke-3 kelompok, asupan energi dan protein tidak berbeda bermakna dan terhadap nilai kecukupan berbeda bermakna, kecuali asupan energi kelompok HD selang 2 hari. Antara ke-3 kelompok, status nutrisi berdasarkan IMT dan status protein somatik berdasarkan LOLA tidak berbeda berrnakna dan terhadap nilai kecukupan pada IMT tidak berbeda bermakna, tetapi pada LOLA berbeda. Status protein viseral berdasarkan prot. tot., alb. dan trans. tidak berbeda antara ke-3 kelompok, terhadap nilai kecukupan nilai albumin tampak berbeda bermakna pada kelompok HD selang 2 dan 3 hari, sedangkan kelompok yang lain tampak tidak berbeda bermakna. Parameter status klinis kadar krea. dan ure. Masing-masing mempunyai korelasi dengan kemaknaan yang tertinggi (p < 0,001) terhadap asupan energi dan protein.
Hasil ini mernperlihatkan bahwa pasien hemodialisis yang secara klinis stabil menunjukkan pada parameter yang dinilai antara ke-3 kelompok, ada yang berbeda bermakna dan ada yang tidak. Hal ini juga diperoleh terhadap nilai kecukupan masing-masing parameter. Disamping itu didapati parameter krea. dan ure. berturut-turut mempunyai kolerasi yang dominan dengan parameter asupan energi dan protein. "

"ABSTRAK
The present study investigated the relationship of nutritional status and work productivity of Indonesian female industrial workers who engaged in light activity. Anthropometrics, hemoglobin (Hb), work productivity, physical activity and several socioeconomic data were collected from 230 female cigarette industrial workers.
Nutritional assessment of studied population showed that the average body mass index of studied population was 19.55 ± 2.33 kg/mz, which 41.3% of the workers were under nutrition which indicated by BMI below 18.5 kg/m2 and 40.4% were anemic while 13.9% of them were under nutrition and anemic.
BMI showed a significant quadratic regression with work productivity (p<0.05). A classification for chronic energy deficiency (CED) using BMI of 18.5 as a cutoff point was related to the functional parameter of work productivity. Workers whose BMI below 18.5 kg/m2 had work productivity about four percent lower than those whose BMI above 18.5. Female workers whose BMI ranged of 18.5 --22.5 kg/re had the highest work productivity among others.
Analysis of variance showed that anemic workers had significantly lower work productivity than the non-anemic workers (p<0.01). The anemic workers produced about five percent less output than the non-anemic workers. There was a linear regression between work productivity and hemoglobin level.
Multiple regression analysis showed that increases in Hb levels, lean body mass and experience were significantly associated with increased work productivity (p<0.01).
This study concluded that Hb, BMI and LBM were significantly related with work productivity. The better nourished workers as determined by BMI, LBM, and Hb levels were more productive than under-nourished workers also the more experienced workers had higher work productivity than the less-experienced workers.

"ABSTRACT
Most poverty prevalence in developing countries is found among people living in rural areas, which depend on agricultural activities as their main source of livelihood (Suryana, 1992, Kuhonta, 1986).
This study assessed the overall condition of the rural community in Pasaman (Jambak and Sarik village) and Sawahlunto/Sijunjung (SP I and SP IV village) district regarding to the poverty and nutritional situation by using an adapted Rapid Rural assessment method which was called RAPID: Rapid Nutritional Assessment for Community Based Poverty Alleviation Projects in Developing Countries, developed by GTZ. The method consists of interviewing key persons, focus group discussion, observation and height measurement of school children (6-9 years old).
Other method to diagnose and analyze the nutritional situation of risk group is a nutritional survey. Interview and anthropometrics measurement of fewer than five children and the mother were done in this method.
A poor state of nutrition and health also leads to lower productivity and reduces the availability of food at the household level, which now forms a vicious cycle. The availability of food can describe the food security status of the household. This study also attempted to look into the main problems of food security on rural community by using food security questionnaire developed by SEARCA (South East Asian Regional Center for Agriculture). The result of interviewing the mothers by this method revealed that current food security status in Jambak and Sarik was better than SP I and SP IV while SP IV was worse than SP I. The similar result was found by other two methods.
RAPID method described the overall condition of the study area in a short time. This method also collected preliminary information on the nature and importance of poverty and nutritional problem, and supply of the resources of the study area. However this method insufficient to describe the relationship between nutritional problem and its determinant factor.
Baseline survey gave the extent of the nutritional problem in the area, nevertheless this method needed some resources; fund, personnel, equipments and time.
Food security method assessed the extent of food security problems in the area, however in this study, it was proved that the questionnaire was not fully applicable, therefore further analyses based on SEARCA method could not be completely applied."

"Salah satu masalah gizi utama di Indonesia yang penanggulangannya belum menunjukkan titik terang adalah anemia gizi. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendapatkan informasi mengenai besarnya prevalensi anemia gizi pada anak pra sekolah di 7 provinsi yang diteliti dan faktor-faktor yang berhubungan dengan prevalensi tersebut.
Data yang digunakan adalah data Survey Evaluasi Xerofthalmia Skala Nasional 1992 di 7 provinsi, yang termasuk juga di dalamnya pemeriksaan kadar Hb pada anak pra sekolah. Pengumpulan data dilakukan oleh Litbang Gizi dengan "Multistage Sampling".
Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa prevalensi anemia gizi secara keseluruhan pada anak pra sekolah di 7 provinsi adalah 42 % . Angka ini bervariasi antara 18.2 % sampai 51.9 %. Analisis kemudian dibagi berdasarkan prevalensi berat (> 40 %) dan ringan/sedang (15 - 40 %).
Di daerah prevalensi berat, faktor anak yang berhubungan dengan kejadian anemia gizi yang tinggi adalah jenis kelamin laki-laki, pemberian Air Susu Ibu yang sering, kadar serum vitamin A yang rendah, jumlah anggota keluarga yang kecil, pendidikan ayah dan ibu yang tinggi. Sedangkan di daerah prevalensi ringan atau sedang pendidikan ayah yang rendah dan kondisi rumah yang baik yang berhubungan dengan kejadian anemia gizi yang tinggi.
Berdasarkan analisis multivariat didapat faktor penentu kejadian anemia gizi yaitu untuk daerah prevalensi berat adalah jenis kelamin, serum vitamin A, pemberian ASI, jumlah anggota keluarga, pendidikan ibu, status pekerjaan kepala keluarga dan sanitasi keluarga. Sedangkan di daerah prevalensi ringan hanya serum vitamin A dan kondisi rumah sebagai faktor penentu.
Berdasarkan hasil di atas, maka disarankan agar program pemberian vitamin A dosis tinggi pada anak pra sekolah perlu ditingkatkan. Disarankan pula dilaksanakannya penyuluhan mengenai pemberian Air Susu Ibu, makanan pendamping Air Susu Ibu dan kesehatan lainnya, pada semua golongan masyarakat, baik golongan ekonomi baik maupun kurang. Perlu adanya program khusus penanggulangan anemia gizi pada anak pra sekolah dan perlu adanya penelitian khusus mengenai anemia gizi."

"ABSTRAK
Penelitian potong lintang dengan sampel tenaga gizi Puskesmas dilakukan di 5 Propinsi: Jawa Timur, Jawa Tengah, Sumatera Barat, Nusa Tenggara Barat dan Irian Jaya. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui pengaruh latar belakang pendidikan, pengalaman bekerja, pelatihan, kerja rangkap dan jenis kelamin terhadap pengetahuan program dan aktivitas tenaga gizi Puskesmas.
Sejumlah 285 orang tenaga gizi Puskesmas yang diteliti, hanya 37.2% yang berlatar belakang pendidikan profesi gizi (AKZI/SPAG). Pada uji statistik kai kuadrat menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara latar belakang pendidikan dengan pengetahuan program (p=0.05;X2=28.61)dan dengan aktivitas (p=0.05; X2=4.78). Tenaga gizi Puskesmas yang mempunyai latar belakang pendidikan AKZI/SPAG mempunyai pengetahuan program dan aktivitas yang lebih baik . Hubungan yang lama ditunjukkan antara variabel pelatihan dengan pengetahuan program (p=0.05; X2.27.36) dan dengan aktivitas (p=0.05;X2=30.42). Tenaga gizi Puskesmas yang pernah mengikuti pelatihan gizi, mempunyai pengetahuan program dan aktivitas yang lebih baik. terdapat hubungan signifikan antara variabel tugas rangkap dengan pengetahuan pada p=0.05 dan X2=31.30dan dengan aktivitas pada p=0.05 dan X2=9.10.Tenaga gizi Puskesmas yang tidak mempunyai tugas rangkap mempunyai pengetahuan program dan aktivitas lebih baik. Demikian juga ditemukan adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara pengalaman bekerja dengan pengetahuan program (p =0.05; x2 =22.84), dan dengan aktivitas (p=0.05; X2=53.20). Tenaga gizi Puskesmas yang berpengalaman kerja lama, mempunyai pengetahuan dan aktivitas lebih baik. Sedangkan jenis kelamin tidak berhubungan signifikan dengan pengetahuan program dan aktivitas. Hasi1 uji multivariat regresi logistik menunjukkan bahwa variabel pendidikan sangat dominan pengaruhnya terhadap pengetahuan program dan aktivitas tenaga gizi Puskesmas.
Disarankan untuk meningkatkan jumlah lulusan AKZI/SPAG dengan menambah jumlah institusi pendidikan, dan memberi kelonggaran tugas belajar bagi pegawai negeri kesehatan untuk mengikuti pendidikan profesi gizi. Pelatihan gizi untuk secara intensif bagi teaaga gizi Puskesmasjuga merupakan alternatif pemecahan masalah jangka pendek agar program gizi Puskesmas berhasil baik.

ABSTRACT
The cross sectional research with samples of nutrition personnel of the Public Health Center was in 5 provinces: East Java, Central Java, West Sumatera, West Nusa Tenggara and Irian Jaya. The purpose of the research is to understand the influence of educational background, work experience, training, and work at two places and sex toward the knowledge of program and activities of Public Health Center nutrition personnel.
Out of the 285 subjects of the Public Health Center nutrition personnel studied, there was only 37.2% which has nutrition profession background (AKZI/SPAG). There is a significant relationship between the educational background the knowledge about the program by using the chi square test (p =0.05; X2=28.61) and with their activities (p=0.05; X2=4.78). The Public Health Center nutrition personnel which have the education background of AKZI/SPAG have a better knowledge about the program and activities. The same relationship indicated between training variable and the program knowledge (p =0.05; X2 =27.36) and the activities (p =0.05; X2=30.42). fl Public Health Center nutrition personnel which have experienced a nutrition training have a knowledge about the program and activities better. There is a significant relationship between the double tasks with the knowledge at p=0.05 and X2=31.30 and with the activities. at p=0.05 and X2=0.10. The Public Health Center nutrition personnel who have no double task have a better knowledge about the program and activities. The same is found that there is a significant relationship between work experience and the program knowledge (p=0.05; X2=22.84), and with the activities (p =0.05; x2=53.20). The Public Health Center nutrition personnel who have a long work experience, have better knowledge and activities. There no significant relationship between the sex and the knowledge of the program and activities. The results of the logistics regression multivariate indicate that the educational variable has a very dominant impact toward the program knowledge and activities of the Public Health Center nutrition personal.
It is suggested to increase the number of the AKZI/SPAG graduates by increasing the number of educational institution, and provide a more flexible study assignment to health public servants to continue the nutrition profession education. The nutrition training intensively for the Public Health Center nutrition a personnel is a solution alternative in the short term in order that the Public Health - Center nutrition personnel is effective.

"TB is still major problem even though number of TB cases had been decline steadily due to discovery and continuing research of TB drugs since 1940 and also increasing of funding and attention to global TB problem. Indonesia is the third country in descending order of TB case numbers. It is considered as the third main cause of death after cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in this country. Several years ago, East Nusa Tenggara province had the highest incidence of sputum smear positive compared with other provinces in Indonesia. TB creates certain burdens in the community, initially in health and nutrition aspect, and then followed by other human aspects including economy and social. It is, therefore, eradicating TB in an effective and efficient way becomes a very emerging issue on TB treatment strategy. Since TB is an immune-related disease, hence, enhancing the immune system might be considered as an important strategy to be considered on TB treatment. Zinc, vitamin A and a new discovered protein, leptin, take a part on that issue. A cross sectional study was conducted with a main objective of investigating the relationship between nutritional and leptin status of new diagnosed pulmonary TB disease with the disease severity in selected districts of East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. This research report is divided into three parts. Part 1 includes comprehensive reviews on the background of the study, literature review, problem statement and rationale, objective, hypotheses, conceptual framework and variable indicator matrix. Part 2 wraps up the manuscript for publication, entitled "Micronutrients and Leptin status Are Associated with the Radiological Features Among New Diagnosed Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients." It is written and formatted based on author's guideline of the Journal of Nutrition. Part 3 covers the supporting documents including detailed methodology and other result, author's guideline of the journal, questionnaire, ethical approval, informed consent, official permit letter, references and curriculum vitae. It is expected that the results of this study may contribute to the body of knowledge about the severity of TB that reflects the specific profile of nutritional status (body fat, BMI, MUAC and micronutrient status) and plasma leptin. Furthermore, it will serve as reference data for further investigations, better interventions and treatments on active pulmonary TB patients."

"Gnetum gnemon LINN., also called tulip tree, is found throughout the islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Locally, this tree is known as melinjo tree, and its young stems and leaves, young and ripe fruits are used in a traditional dish. The seeds of the ripe fruits are eaten after roasting. The seeds may also be processed in household-food industries into flattened and dried flakes called "owing melinjo". Prior to consumption, emping melinjo is usually fried in coconut fat which renders it crispy with a specific bitter taste. Emping melinjo is also exported to Middle East countries and the Netherlands (Departemen Perindustrian, 1988).
The nutritional value of emping melinjo has not yet been studied in detail. A feeding trial using rats fed emping melinjo as the sole source of protein showed a low protein efficiency ratio when compared with skim milk (Oey, 1979). Budiarso and Sihombing (1989) reported that livers of rats fed diets containing melinjo seeds as major ingredient had perilobular necrosis. These studies suggest that emping melinjo has low nutritional value and may even contain toxic substances. However, the diets used consisted of emping melinjo as sole source of protein supplemented with vitamin and mineral mixtures. This is very different from the situation in Indonesians who consume emping melinjo as a snack, side dish or as a component of the rice menu. Thus, a study was performed with rats fed nutritionally adequate diets with varying levels of emping melinjo, either in dried/unfried or dried/fried form. The nutritional value of emping melinjo was assessed on the basis of growth performance, histology of selected organs, selected blood measures, nitrogen digestibility, and mineral absorption.
In the first experiment, purified diets were used containing either 0, 10, 20 or 40 % (w/w) of dried/unfried emping melinjo. The control diet (without emping melinjo) contained casein as sole source of protein and was formulated according to the recommendations of the National Research Council: it contained 5 % of fat. The four experimental diets were balanced for nitrogen, fat, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. There were 8 male rats per dietary group; the experimental period lasted 14 days. The rats had free access to food and demineralized water.
Feed intake and weight gain were not significantly affected by emping melinjo in the diet. Cecum weight, including contents, was raised markedly after feeding emping melinjo. Feces production rose after consumption of emping in a dose-dependent fashion, but dry matter content fell. Histological examination showed that liver and jejunum were unaffected by the feeding of emping, but nephrocalcinosis was induced.
The amount of emping melinjo in the diet did not affect hematocrit values and blood hemoglobin concentrations. Plasma triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations were significantly lowered by emping melinjo in a dose-dependent fashion. Apparent nitrogen digestibility was gradually decreased with increasing emping melinjo concentrations in the diet. The highest dietary concentration of emping used, i.e. 40 %, significantly reduced the apparent absorption of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.
As a component of the human diet, melinjo is not consumed in its dry form but after frying in coconut fat. It could be suggested that dried/fried melinjo does not negatively affect mineral and nitrogen absorption because eiher possible anti-nutritional factors are denaturated by frying or the nutrients in emping become more accessible to digestive processes. The second experiment was carried out to test this suggestion. In addition, the solubility of minerals in the ileal lumen was determined to obtain clues as to the mechanism underlying the inhibitory effectof emping on mineral absorption. Soluble minerals in the ileal lumen are considered to be available for absorption as opposed to insoluble minerals.
There were three experimental diets: a control diet, a diet containing 40 % dried/unfried emping and a diet containing 40 % dried/fried emping ( corrected for the fat taken up while frying). The high-fat diets (15 % fat) were carefully balanced for nitrogen, fat, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. There were 12 male rats per dietary group, which had free access to food and demineralized water; the experimental period lasted 14 days.
Feed intake did not differ significantly between the three experimental groups, but weight gain was some what depressed by both dried/unfried and dried/fried emping. The two emping preparations raised cecum weight and feces production, while the dry matter content of feces dropped.
As was observed in experiment 1, the feeding of dried/unfried emping at a level of 40 % of the diet significantly reduced the apparent absorption of nitrogen, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Frying of emping caused disappearance of the inhibitory effect on calcium and magnesium absorption whereas nitrogen and phosphorus absorption were still reduced, albeit to a lower extent.
Dried/unfried and dried/fried emping in the diet raised both the amount of solid and liquid phase in the ileum. The concentrations of soluble calcium and magnesium were decreased by dried/unfried as well as dried/fried emping. The concentration of phosphorus in the liquid phase of the ileal lumen was lowered by dried/unfried but not by dried/fried emping.
The addition of dried/unfried emping melinjo to the diet of rats at the expense of isonitrogenous amounts of nitrogen caused a lowering of the absorption of nitrogen, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. This effect is either completely or partly abolished by frying of the emping melinjo Frying of dried/emping did not increase the concentrations of calcium and magnesium in the liquid phase of the ileum so that its stimulatory effect on calcium and magnesium absorption remains obscure. Frying of emping did raise the ileal solubility of phosphorus. Frying of emping did raise the ileal solubility of phosphorus.
The still some what reduced absorption of phosphorus as seen after the feeding of fried emping is probably the result of unavailable phosphorus as phytate in the emping. The reduced absorption of nitrogen in rats fed either dried/fried or fried emping could relate to the presence of poorly digestible material in the intestine as evidenced by the increased weight of solid phase in the ileal lumen. This undigestible material probably represents polysaccharides which raise microbial activity in the cecum leading to the formation of fatty acids and thereby elevating the water content of feces. The undigestible polysaccharides in emping melinjo, if and when present, could also be responsible for its cholesterol lowering activity."
