This research discusses distance in human communication. In the study of intercultural communication, distance or space as a physical boundary is known as proxemic. The study was conducted on residents on the banks of the Ciliwung river in Kampung Pulo who were relocated to a rented apartment (Rusunawa) West Jatinegara in 2016. The distance of communication in the collectivistic community is seen when vertical space removes the meaning of the previous horizontal space. Longer physical distances due to stairs and lifts interfere with horizontal organic communication and the closer social 'village lifestyle'. Changes in communication distance occur in the space between people, space between units, space between floors, and space between buildings. Changes in the character of the collectivistic society also occur in new spaces that carry the concept of individualistic housing. However, there has been a change in the meaning of the new spaces adapted by the relocation residents after three years of living in the flat. The transition of the Kampung Pulo cultural community activities was carried out due to the awareness of the residents to maintain cohesiveness which is considered a valuable heritage of their group. This research is expected to provide a detailed description of changes in human communication patterns from one room to a different room related to communication distance. This study realizes that the cultural context plays a very important role in interpreting the common space of the reference group and not merely a matter of physical changes to the occupancy, place more than a space."

"Throughout Western society there are now strong pressures for social and racial integration but, in spite of these, recent experience has shown that greater intergroup contact can actually reinforce social distinctions and ethnic stereotypes. The studies collected here examine, from a broad sociological perspective, the sorts of face-to-face verbal exchange that are characteristic of industrial societies, and the volume as a whole pointedly demonstrates the role played by communicative phenomena in establishing and reinforcing social identity. The method of analysis that has been adopted enables the authors to reveal and examine a centrally important but hitherto little discussed conversational mechanism: the subconscious processes of inference that result from situational factors, social presuppositions and discourse conventions. The theory of conversation and the method of analysis that inform the author's approach are discussed in the first two chapters, and the case studies themselves examine interviews, counselling sessions and similar formal exchanges involving contacts between a wide range of different speakers: South Asians, West Indians and native English speakers in Britain; English natives and Chinese in South-East Asia; Afro-Americans, Asians and native English speakers in the United States; and English and French speakers in Canada. The volume will be of importance to linguists, anthropologists, psychologists, and others with a professional interest in communication, and its findings will have far-reaching applications in industrial and community relations and in educational practice."

"A highly interdisciplinary overview of the wide spectrum of current international research and professional practice in intercultural communication, this is a key reference book for students, lecturers and professionals alike. Key examples of contrastive, interactive, imagological and interlingual approaches are discussed, as well as the impact of cultural, economic and socio-political power hierarchies in cultural encounters, essential for contemporary research in critical intercultural communication and postcolonial studies. The Handbook also explores the spectrum of professional applications of that research, from intercultural teaching and training to the management of culturally mixed groups, facilitating use by professionals in related fields. Theories are introduced systematically using ordinary language explanations and examples, providing an engaging approach to readers new to the field. Students and researchers in a wide variety of disciplines, from cultural studies to linguistics, will appreciate this clear yet in-depth approach to an ever-evolving contemporary field."
