The reconstruction of society after conflict is complex and multifaceted. This book investigates this theme as it relates to cultural heritage through a number of case studies relating to European wars since 1864. The case studies show in detail how buildings, landscapes, and monuments become important agents in postconflict reconstruction, as well as how their meanings change and how they become sites of competition over historical narratives and claims. Looking at iconic and lesser-known sites, this book connects broad theoretical discussions of reconstruction and memorialization to specific physical places, and in the process it traces shifts in their meanings over time. This book identifies common threads and investigates their wider implications. It explores the relationship between cultural heritage and international conflict, paying close attention to the long aftermaths of acts of destruction and reconstruction and making important contributions through the use of new empirical evidence and critical theory. Marie Louise Stig Sorensen is a Reader in Archaeology at the University of Cambridge and Professor of Bronze Age Studies at Leiden University. She coordinates the University of Cambridge's postgraduate degree program in archaeological heritage and museums, one of the first degree courses in this field

Discusses EU transport policy and approaches to planning and implementation of European corridors across multiple territorial governances Examines the impacts of current development projects from policy, procedural, technological and environmental standpoints Illuminates lessons learned from local-regional projects, in order to lay out new and re-defined planning aims and tools Based on the work of Poly5, or the Mediterranean Corridor Mega-Transport Infrastructure Project, this ground-breaking reference explains how and why traditional top-down government-defined transport planning policies are failing, due to their tendency to eschew acknowledgement of profoundly multifarious local and regional issues. The authors use cognitive reports from the Mediterranean Corridor experience as a learning platform, unpacking the tangled sources of the challenges faced to find firm ground from which to embark upon future projects. They propose the replacement of the current fragmented and unbalanced implementation efforts across various territories with a bottom-up, holistic, inclusive approach in which individual territories and regions have buy-in from the outset. This ensures that territories have a chance to bring their strengths to bear on broader infrastructural planning, benefit from an ongoing communication channel to report and tackle difficulties, and support clear, strategic directives to drive sustainable future growth of mega-transport systems.

In European founders at work, several of the top European startup founders and venture capitalists are interviewed to explain their respective paths to building a successful company. It takes a similar approach to Venture Capitalists at Work and other books in Apress' elite At Work series but with a focus on the differences between building a successful company in Europe versus the U.S.
These insightful interviews are presented in a way that will help readers understand the founders local or a global views, how they competed on the global scale, if and how they got funding and their main challenges and opportunities. The companies chosen to be interviewed are a mix of unique worldwide ventures: European-only ventures and even a few copycats of already-proven concepts. As such, it provides a balanced view on the European scene. This mix also includes companies that started in Europe and moved to the U.S., companies who went IPO in their country of origin, companies with European venture capital backing, and companies that bootstrapped their way to success.
