" This paper reflects on the relationship between postcolonial criticism (PC) and Southeast Asian Studies. The emphasis is on the apparent premature retreat from PC as well as its unfulfilled promises and persistent pitfalls. I argue that it is premature to abandon PC because it remains relevant, even essential, in the context of the much ballyhooed age of “knowledge economy” or “information society.” There is a need to take another look at its promises and to work towards fulfilling them, but at the same time be conscious
of its persistent problems."

"The essays in this volume are not intended to outline the initial stages of spread of Buddhist doctrines to various parts of Asia. Nor are they meant to be introductory narratives of Buddhism in different regions of Asia. Rather the essays deal with complex issues related to Buddhism, in the process by which the doctrines, in their varied forms and manifestations. Many of the essays are detailed exposition of these evolving phases of Buddhist history in Asia, from the early common era to the twentieth century. "

"The great Indian nationalist leader Subhas Chandra Bose arrived in Singapore in 1943 to revitalize the Indian National Army (INA). Taking the opportunity of the Japanese occupation of parts of Southeast Asia, he launched armed struggle against British colonial rule in India. Two years later, that attempt failed at the eastern gates of India. Yet, it was a temporary failure because the INA helped set in motion a series of developments within India. These would culminate in its freedom in a further two years. Bose is household name in India. He is remembered in Southeast Asia as well, particularly among Indians."

"This book honours Anthony Reid at the occasion of his retirement from the Asian Research Institute in Singapore where he was a founding father. Tony Reid belongs to the great historians of Southeast Asia who did -- and still does -- innovative and stimulating research ranging from the history of seismology in Early Modern History to the histories of revolutions and nationalism. A wonderful academic organizer and institution builder, and an unparalleled networker who demonstrates a deep commitment to numerous places including Aceh, he also has a perfect sense of timing in putting certain topics on the academic agenda."

Japan has been known as a pacifist country since the post-World War II period, largely due to Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, which serves as the foundation of Japan's identity. Japan's foreign policy appears to prioritize economic instruments and policies to pursue national interests. Since Shinzo Abe assumed the position of Prime Minister in 2012, literature and media have highlighted changes in Japan's foreign policy, initiated by Abe's proposal to revise Article 9 as a cornerstone of Japan's identity. Additionally, his leadership has been noted for being the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japan. To examine the dynamics of Japan's foreign policy in Abe's second era, this paper maps 44 literature pieces in the form of journal articles, using a taxonomy method categorized into five main themes: (1) domestic elements in foreign policy, (2) Japan's foreign relations, (3) security issues in Japan's foreign policy, (4) economic issues in Japan's foreign policy, and (5) socio-cultural issues in Japan's foreign policy. From the review of these five main themes, the author identifies consensus, debates, reflections, and syntheses to analyze and interpret the findings from the distribution of literature. The main literature shows contrasting views against the negative perceptions of mass media and other literature towards Japan during Shinzo Abe's leadership. The author finds that the dynamics of change in Japan's foreign policy during Abe's era from 2012 to 2020 can be explained by geopolitical factors and Abe's significance as a leader shaping foreign policy processes in Japan's domestic politics. Based on these findings, this paper recommends several further analyses and emphasizes the importance of not solely focusing on structural or individual units of analysis, but also exploring domestic factors in foreign policy analysis."
