"Several pieces of research on the toponym of place names in Indonesia have been carried out but focus on place names on the island of Java. The limited documentation of place names makes the study of toponymy in Sumatra a must. This article aims to map the thematization of place naming on the West Coast of Sumatra Island. The research was conducted in a qualitative descriptive manner with a corpus linguistic approach. Data was collected by means of documentation, interviews, and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed by following work procedures by Miles and Huberman (2013), involving data condensation, data display, verification drawing, and Sudaryat's toponymy categorization (2009). The results showed that the toponym of place names on the West Coast of Sumatra Island reflects the relationship between humans and their natural environment. This relationship is manifested through the thematization of place names, namely: embodiment, social, and culture. The embodiment aspect includes the sub-themes of water background, topographical background, and natural environment background. The social aspects include the sub-themes of residential background, economic activity background, and building background. The cultural aspects include sub-themes of myths, folklore, and legends passed down through oral traditions."

This study aims to examine the meanings behind the names of sub-districts in South Tangerang City that use the word "pondok." A toponymic approach is employed to identify and classify the meanings of these sub-district names based on three aspects: categorical meaning, associative meaning, and emotive meaning (Nyström, 2016). Data were obtained through interviews and direct observations with local residents, as well as analysis based on the Indonesian dictionary KBBI VI Online. The results of the study indicate that the meanings of the sub-district names are predominantly categorized as plant-related, encompassing 8 out of 13 sub-districts, followed by categories of buildings, notable figures, history, and aspirations. Associatively, some sub-districts are positively related to environmental and historical aspects, while others have negative associations related to traffic congestion and flooding issues. From an emotive aspect, the sub-district names reflect the residents' feelings of pride and comfort regarding the development of infrastructure and their environment, although some areas face emotional challenges due to environmental problems. This study contributes to the understanding of the cultural and historical background of sub-district naming in South Tangerang, as well as expanding the knowledge of toponymy in Indonesia."

This research is about the toponymy of the seven ancient port cities on the Spice Route of the North Coast of Java which were famous in the 15th to 19th century. Qualitative research methods were used to collect data based on literature studies on written sources of philology, archeology-history, history, and geography. This research is conducted as a linguistic trans-disciplinary study through semantic, semiotic and toponym analysis to explore the topography of the seven ancient port cities of Banten, Sunda Kelapa, Cirebon, Jepara, Tuban, Gresik, and Surabaya in a linguistic and archaeological approach. Names of ancient ports in the north coast region of Java Island are collected from ancient written sources in the form of geographic maps, ancient inscriptions, ancient manuscripts, and interview results, in relation to archeological features which constitute the social landscape of maritime culture on the Spice Route Ancient Ports in North Coast of Java. Toponyms are the recorded data that show history, cultural contact, and language development.
The results of this study show the link between the results of toponymy studies and cultural representations, as it is shown through the study of the role of place names in contemporary culture and its meaning in history. Through a linguistic and archaeological-historical perspective, the seven toponyms meaning along the North Coast of Java Island is seen as a continuation of the cultural cycle. Toponymy from the linguistic aspect provides clues to the historical and cultural characteristics of a region. Then, history contributes to justifying existed archeological and linguistic findings. Archeology is also a strong supporting data to provide physical evidence of the cultural existence that has lived and the cultural contact which occurred in the ports along the North Coast of Java Island. The existing archeological features show the various cultural contexts of the nations that surround each city, in relation to the term Nusantara as the world's maritime axis in the past. The term maritime refers to all human activities related to the sea in supporting their lives. By studying the culture of society in the past that united the archipelago in the glory of the Spice Route as an international trade route, it is hoped that in the future it can strengthen the identity of the Indonesian nation again as the world's maritime axis.

"Quantitative Methods in the Humanities and Social Sciences is a book series designed to foster research-based conversation with all parts of the university campus from buildings of ivy-covered stone to technologically savvy walls of glass. Scholarship from international researchers and the esteemed editorial board represents the far-reaching applications of computational analysis, statis- tical models, computer-based programs, and other quantitative methods. Methods are integrated in a dialogue that is sensitive to the broader context of humanistic study and social science research. Scholars, including among others historians, archaeologists, classicists and linguists, promote this interdisciplinary approach. These texts teach new methodological approaches for contemporary research. Each volume exposes readers to a particular research method. Researchers and students then benefit from exposure to subtleties of the larger project or corpus of work in which the quan- titative methods come to fruition."

"English Corpus Linguistics is a step-by-step guide to creating and analyzing linguistic corpora. It begins with a discussion of the role that corpus linguistics plays in linguistic theory, demonstrating that corpora have proven to be very useful resources for linguists who believe that their theories and descriptions of English should be based on real, rather than contrived, data. Charles F. Meyer goes on to describe how to plan the creation of a corpus, how to collect and computerize data for inclusion in a corpus, how to annotate the data that are collected, and how to conduct a corpus analysis of a completed corpus. The book concludes with an overview of the future challenges that corpus linguists face to make both the creation and analysis of corpora much easier undertakings than they currently are. Clearly organized and accessibly written, this book will appeal to students of linguistics and English language."

"This study looks at the toponym of Jember in relation to its history and the Pendalungan sub-culture–a mixture between Javanese and Madurese culture. This sub-culture is found in the Horseshoe area of East Java. The data were drawn from library research, observation, and interviews with various people, such as the local authorities, academicians, historians, andexperts in culture. The result of this study indicates that the Jemberese can have cross-cultural competence that has a bargaining position if they could “engineer” their cultural diversity both historically and aesthetically. Being the characteristics of people living the Horse shoe area, Pendalunganis an interesting research object which is still an open discourse. The role of the public, historians, and the government is needed to preserve the Pendalungan in Jember without changing the steady cultural order."
