ABSTRACT
Environmental Process Analysis" takes a unique approach, applying mathematical and numerical process modeling within the context of both natural and engineered environmental systems. Readers master core principles of natural and engineering science such as chemical equilibria, reaction kinetics, ideal and non-ideal reactor theory, and mass accounting by performing practical real-world analyses. As they progress through the text, readers will have the opportunity to analyze a broad range of environmental processes and systems, including water and wastewater treatment, surface mining, agriculture, landfills, subsurface saturated and unsaturated porous media, aqueous and marine sediments, surface waters, and atmospheric moisture.
The text begins with an examination of water, core definitions, and a review of important chemical principles. It then progressively builds upon this base with applications of Henry's law, acid/base equilibria, and reactions in ideal reactors. Finally, the text addresses reactions in non-ideal reactors and advanced applications of acid/base equilibria, complexation and solubility/dissolution equilibria, and oxidation/reduction equilibria.
Several tools are provided to fully engage readers in mastering new concepts and then applying them in practice, including: Detailed examples that demonstrate the application of concepts and principles Problems at the end of each chapter challenging readers to apply their newfound knowledge to analyze environmental processes and systems MathCAD worksheets that provide a powerful platform for constructing process models.

"ABSTRACT
The phase equilibria study of the Cu-Fe-O-Si-Ca system in equilibrium with metallic copper and iron aimed to determine the limit of removal of copper from copper smelting slag (Slag cleaning process). A literature review on information of phase equilibria of related systems at high temperature has been conducted and it is important basis for determining expected phase in the system and for the copper slag cleaning process.The experimental methodology used in the present study involves high temperature equilibration, rapid cooling of the samples, and microanalysis on the chemical compositions of all phases using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The influence of temperature, Fe/SiO2 ration in slag, and CaO additive on the phase equilibria have been experimentally investigated. The selected experimental parameters are expected to influence the liquidus composition, major elements distributions between phases, and the activity of residual metal in the slag. All of these will influence the overall removal of metal from the slag phase. The experimental data are compared with the prediction results from the FactSage thermochemical software with public database. The slag system investigated in the present study is highly important for high-temperature copper smelting, converting and recycling processes.   

ABSTRAK
Studi kesetimbangan fase sistem Cu-Fe-O-Si-Ca dalam kesetimbangan dengan logam tembaga dan besi bertujuan untuk menentukan batas pembersihan tembaga dari slag peleburan tembaga (proses pembersihan slag). Tinjauan literatur tentang informasi kesetimbangan fasa sistem terkait pada suhu tinggi telah dilakukan dan merupakan dasar penting untuk menentukan fase yang diharapkan dalam sistem dan untuk proses pembersihan slag tembaga. Metodologi eksperimental yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini melibatkan kesetimbangan suhu tinggi, pendinginan sampel yang cepat, dan analisis mikro pada komposisi kimia dari semua fase menggunakan Analisis Elektron X-ray Mikroanalisis (EPMA). Pengaruh suhu, rasio Fe/SiO2 dalam slag, dan aditif CaO pada kesetimbangan fase telah diteliti secara eksperimental. Parameter eksperimental yang dipilih diharapkan untuk mempengaruhi komposisi liquidus, distribusi elemen utama antara fase, dan aktivitas logam sisa dalam slag. Semua ini akan mempengaruhi penghapusan logam secara keseluruhan dari fase slag. Data eksperimental dibandingkan dengan hasil prediksi dari perangkat lunak termokimia FactSage dengan database publik. Sistem slag yang diselidiki dalam penelitian ini sangat penting untuk proses peleburan, konversi, dan daur ulang tembaga suhu tinggi. "
