"Here is an elementary development of the Sinc-Galerkin method with the focal point being ordinary and partial differential equations. This is the first book to explain this powerful computational method for treating differential equations. These methods are an alternative to finite difference and finite element schemes, and are especially adaptable to problems with singular solutions. The text is written to facilitate easy implementation of the theory into operating numerical code.
The authors' use of differential equations as a backdrop for the presentation of the material allows them to present a number of the applications of the sinc method. Many of these applications are useful in numerical processes of interest quite independent of differential equations. Specifically, numerical interpolation and quadrature, while fundamental to the Galerkin development, are useful in their own right.
The intimate connection between collocation and Galerkin for the sinc basis is exposed via sinc-interpolation. The quadrature rules define a class of numerical integration methods that complement better known techniques, which in the case of singular integrands, often require modification. The sinc methodology of the text is illustrated on such applications as initial data recovery, heat diffusion, advective-diffusive transport, and Burgers' equation, to illustrate the numerical implementation of the theory discussed.
Engineers may find sinc methods a very competitive approach to the more common boundary element or finite element methods. Further, workers in the signal processing community may find this particular approach a refreshingly different view of the use of sinc functions.
Sinc approximation is a relatively new numerical technique. This book provides a much needed elementary level explanation. It has been used for graduate numerical classes at Montana State University and Texas Tech University.

"Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for solving partial differential equations, developed in the late 1990s, have become popular among computational scientists. This book covers both theory and computation as it focuses on three primal DG methods -- the symmetric interior penalty Galerkin, incomplete interior penalty Galerkin, and nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin which are variations of interior penalty methods. The author provides the basic tools for analysis and discusses coding issues, including data structure, construction of local matrices, and assembling of the global matrix. Computational examples and applications to important engineering problems are also included."

"A practical handbook for understanding and using fast adaptive composite grid (FAC) methods for discretization and solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). Contains fundamental concepts.
These so-called FAC are characterized by their use of a composite grid, which is nominally the union of various uniform grids. FAC is capable of producing a composite grid with tailored resolution, and a corresponding solution with commensurate accuracy, at a cost proportional to the number of composite grid points. Moreover, special asynchronous versions of the fast adaptive composite grid methods (AFAC) studied here have seemingly optimal complexity in a parallel computing environment.
Most of the methods treated in this book were discovered only within the last decade, and in many cases their development is still in its infancy. While this is not meant to be comprehensive, it does provide a theoretical and practical guide to multilevel adaptive methods and relevant discretization techniques. It also contains new material, which is included to fill in certain gaps and to expose new avenues of research. Also, because adaptive refinement seems to demand a lot of attention to philosophical issues, personal perspectives are often brought freely into the discussion."

"The multilevel projection method is a new formalism that provides a framework for the development of multilevel algorithms in a very general setting. This methodology guides the choices of all the major multilevel processes, including relaxation and coarsening, and it applies directly to global or locally-refined discretizations."
