"This paper reports on the results of a survey conducted with a view towards finding out why words coined or introduced by the Indonesian National Center of Language Development are readily, half-readily or not readily accepted by the target speech community as exemplified by the words mantan ("former";) anda ("you") and sangkil ("efficient") respectively. Data were drawn by means of a survey questionnaire which was developed on the basis of an assumption that corpus planning products can be likened to manufactured goods and that members of the community will "buy" them if: (1) they know that they exist; (2) they need them; (3) they believe they are good (or better than the existing ones); (4) other people (possibly whose socioeconomic status is higher) use them; and (5) they know how to use them. The data obtained were analyzed along this line of thinking, including using a five-point semantic-differential scale for measuring respondents' assessment of some newly coined or introduced wards or terms. The implications of the findings for the corpus planning of Indonesian, the national language of Indonesia, are considered."

"[Over the last fi fty years, language policy has developed into a major discipline, drawing on research and practice in many nations and at many levels. This is the fi rst Handbook to deal with language policy as a whole

"Language policy is an issue of critical importance in the world today. In this up-to-date introduction, Bernard Spolsky explores many debates at the forefront of language policy: ideas of correctness and bad language, bilingualism and multilingualism, language death and efforts to preserve endangered languages, language choice as a human and civil right and language education policy. Through looking at the language practices, beliefs and management of social groups from families to supranational organizations, he develops a theory of modern national language policy and the major forces controlling it, such as the demands for efficient communication, the pressure for national identity, the attractions of (and resistance to) English as a global language and the growing concern for human and civil rights as they impinge on language. Two central questions asked in this wide-ranging survey are how to recognize language policies, and whether or not language can be managed at all."

This research explains the use of Russian language in post-Soviet Uzbekistan related to its language policy. This thesis uses descriptive-analytical method, with the constitution and language law of Uzbekistan as primary sources, and results of survey on language use in Uzbekistan from numerous institutions, then analyzed with language policy and planning theories . The evidence in this thesis shows that Uzbekistan has been implementing language policy and planning in spheres of general life, education, and mass media in purpose of building the national identity and social integrity. Related to the implementation of language policy, bilingualism occur in Uzbekistan with the use of Russian language and Uzbek language in many spheres of life. It is then concluded that the use of Russian language is reduced although it is still widely spoken."
