"While Americans often believe that owning a home serves as a tool for building stronger communities and crafting better citizens, this book argues that these long-standing beliefs about the public benefits of homeownership are deeply mischaracterized. As owning a home has emerged as the most important way to build wealth in the United States, it has also reshaped the way citizens become involved in their communities. Rather than engaging as public-spirited stewards of civic life, the book argues that homeowners often engage in local politics as a way to protect their property values. This civic engagement, the book argues, contributes to the politics of exclusion. It keeps particular citizens from gaining access to high-opportunity neighborhoods and reinforces patterns of residential segregation. It often marginalizes renters from participation in public life, and it equates property values with the common good. Through an analysis of the politics of homeownership, this book asks readers to reconsider the power of homeownership to strengthen citizenship and build better communities.

Needs and lifestyle of upper-middle class community of Jakarta in general is high mobility. It is one of the triggers of the crisis of a sense of place. This crisis in the long term will lead to dulling of sensory abilities of individuals in experiencing space. This will lead to a decreased ability of individuals to make sense of his existence, because when the individual is not able to feel its existence, it has no identity. This thesis then examines how the role of architecture, through design can respond to these issues. The role of design in this case is as a medium to engage individuals with the space. Spatial engagement will make individuals achieve a sense of place?starting with making people feel involved in a space, until he interpret his involvement with the feeling of existence so that the space will be interpreted into a place. Through case studies, the cafe, the thesis examines how design exercise its role and how the phenomenon of spatial engagement in achieving a sense of place that happens. From these observations it was found that the key is to design by appreciate the context and offset by prioritizing how space is experienced, in this case through sensibility approach."

This study explores the dynamics of place ballet as the phenomenon of encounters in human’s daily life contributing to the shift in place attachment. Place ballet’s contribution as unconscious encounters in everyday routines result in a sense of familiarity and attachment towards a certain situation, elements, and place embodied in memory. In theory, place ballet achieves singularity through the repetitiveness of encounters occurring in everyday routines. However, there is a limitation on replicating everyday encounters, thus bringing disruptions in the everyday routine and evoking consciousness in the repeating of routine and the absence of place ballet. This study explores the shifting of everyday encounters, evoking the character’s consciousness of space and the shift from place attachment into detachment, as presented in the movie The Truman Show (1998) by Peter Weir. This paper identifies the shifting of a sense of consciousness as human interacts with the dynamics of place ballet, evoking shift in place attachment. The shifted perceptions of everyday encounters and place attachment on some degree indicates change in the feeling of existential insideness and human’s role in place."
