"This book describes the growing field of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) as applied to materials selection in product design. Useful in academic and research contexts, as well as to practitioners in materials engineering and design, it aids readers in producing successful designs by improving the decision-making process in materials selection.
It is a constant challenge for designers, even when educated in the fundamentals of materials and mechanical engineering, to select the best materials to satisfy complex design problems. Current approaches to materials selection range from the use of intuition and experience to computer-based methods including electronic databases and search engines. Increasingly, MCDM methods are proving effective in materials selection for complex design problems. These methods supplement existing quantitative methods, such as selection charts, by allowing simultaneous consideration of design attributes, component configurations and types of material.

"Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh rancangan pengelompokan multi variabel spare part inventory untuk aircraft part menggunakan pendekatan Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) yang mudah diaplikasikan dan mempermudah dalam pengelolaan dan penentuan kebijakan terhadap inventori spare part berdasarkan pengelompokannya. Pengelompokan inventori ini dilakukan berdasarkan 5 kriteria utama yaitu criticality, lead time, demand pattern, supplier sourcing dan unit price. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan criticality mempunyai bobot prioritas tertinggi dalam pengelompokan inventori. Penggunaan metode Fuzzy AHP terbukti dapat memberikan hasil yang reliable karena dapat mengakomodasi subjektifitas dalam pengambilan keputusan.

This research is aimed at gaining classification design of multi-criteria spare part inventory for aircraft part using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) approach which can be applied easily as well as facilitate the management and the determination of policy toward spare part inventory based on the classification. The inventory classification carried out is grounded on 5 main criteria e.g. critically, lead time, demand pattern, supplier souring, and unit price. The study result indicates that critically shows the highest quality of priority in inventory classification. Fuzzy AHP method proves to be able to give a reliable result because it can accommodate subjectivity in a decision making.
