"Rice has been an important cultivated crop in Korea since c. 1500 BC, but in historical times it was a luxury food too valuable for consumption by the farmers who produced it. It was widely used as a form of currency and for tax payments. Analysis of plant remains from Sangdong-dong and Songguk-ri, two Bronze Age settlements of the early first millennium BC, however, reveals that rice was not the preserve of elites in that period. The situation changed with the state formation during the first three centuries AD, when rice consumption became increasingly restricted. Thus in Korea rice was not initially cultivated as a luxury food, but became so through social and political change."

"Skripsi ini membahas mengenai Hallyu sebagai soft power dalam promosi pariwisata Korea Selatan. Hallyu dalam penelitian ini difokuskan kepada drama, variety show, dan video musik. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif analitik. Kepopuleran Hallyu di dunia internasional yang dimanfaatkan sebagai soft power oleh pemerintah Korea Selatan dapat dilihat pada ajang promosi pariwisata yang menyertakan bintang-bintang Hallyu dalam iklan pariwisata dan menjadikan mereka sebagai duta pariwisata Korea Selatan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Hallyu, yang merupakan salah satu bentuk dari soft power Korea Selatan, berkontribusi terhadap peningkatan pariwisata Korea Selatan.

This thesis will discuss about Hallyu as a soft power in South Korea's tourism promotion. The focus of Hallyu in this thesis are drama series, variety shows, and music videos. This research use qualitative method with analytic descriptive approach. The international popularity of Hallyu that used as a soft power by the government of South Korea can be seen from the participation of Hallyu stars in tourism promotion and the government made them as tourism ambassador. The result of this research will show us that Hallyu, one of South Korea's soft power, contributes in the increasing of South Korea tourism."

"Popularitas hallyu yang terus meningkat seiring dengan laju globalisasi yang cepat telah membawa nama Korea Selatan semakin terkenal di kancah internasional. Melihat keantusiasan yang diberikan oleh dunia internasional terhadap hallyu, Korea Selatan menggunakan kesempatan tersebut untuk mengenalkan budaya tradisionalnya kepada dunia melalui sebuah proyek global bernama Han Style. Sebagai salah satu aspek dari proyek budaya global Han Style, Hanbok rupanya mengalami modernisasi dari segi rupa, warna, dan motif yang sengaja disesuaikan dengan perubahan zaman dan tren dalam industri fesyen. Penelitian ini menelaah dua fungsi atau peran Hanbok sebagai bagian dari strategi diplomasi budaya Korea Selatan. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode analisis deskriptif dan pendekatan kualitatif berupa studi literatur. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Hanbok dipopulerkan oleh pemerintah sebagai alat atau sarana bagi Korea Selatan untuk mendapatkan pengakuan atas eksistensinya sebagai suatu bangsa dalam lingkup internasional. Beberapa upaya yang dilakukan oleh pemerintah Korea Selatan dalam mencapai tujuan tersebut antara lain adalah mengenakan Hanbok dalam kunjungan diplomatik, mengadakan pertukaran budaya dan pameran dengan tema Hanbok, serta mendukung perancang Hanbok dalam berkreasi dan berinovasi.

The popularity of hallyu which keeps increasing along with the rapid pace of globalization has brought South Korea's name to be more well-known internationally. Seeing the enthusiasm given by the international community to hallyu, South Korea took that as an opportunity to introduce its traditional cultures to the world through a global project named Han Style. As one of the aspects of the global cultural project, Hanbok seems to be an undergoing modernization in terms of appearance, color, and motifs which are deliberately adapted to the changing eras and trends in the fashion industry. This study examines two functions or roles of Hanbok as a part of South Korea's cultural diplomacy strategy. This research was conducted using descriptive analysis methods and qualitative approaches in the form of literature studies. The results showed that Hanbok was popularized by the government as a tool or means for South Korea to gain recognition for its existence as a nation in the international sphere. Some of South Korea government’s efforts to achieve that goal include wearing Hanbok on diplomatic visits, holding cultural exchanges and exhibitions with Hanbok as the theme, and supporting designers with their creation and innovation of Hanbok."
