Zizek, Slavoz
"What do we know about Hegel? What do we know about Marx? What do we know about democracy and totalitarianism? Communism and psychoanalysis? What do we know that isn't a platitude that we've heard a thousand times or a self-satisfied certainty? Through his brilliant reading of Hegel, Slavoj Zizek, one of the most provocative and widely-read thinkers of our time, upends our traditional understanding, dynamites every cliché and undermines every conviction in order to clear the ground for new ways of answering these questions. When Lacan described Hegel as the most sublime hysteric, he was referring to the way that the hysteric asks questions because he experiences his own desire as if it were the Other's desire. In the dialectical process, the question asked of the Other is resolved through a reflexive turn in which the question begins to function as its own answer. We had made Hegel into the theorist of abstraction and reaction, but by reading Hegel with Lacan, Zizek unveils a Hegel of the concrete and of revolution, his own, and the one to come."

Burke, Edmund, 1729-1797
"By the eighteenth century, the term 'sublime' was used to communicate a sense of unfathomable and awe-inspiring greatness, whether in nature or thought. The relationship of sublimity to classical definitions of beauty was much debated, but the first philosopher to portray them as opposing forces was Edmund Burke (1729–97). Originally published in 1757 and reissued here in the revised second edition of 1759, this influential treatise explores the psychological origins of both ideas. Presented as distinct consequences of very separate emotional lineages, beauty and sublimity are traced back through a web of human feelings, from self-preservation instincts to lust. Burke's doctrine of the sublime was to have far-reaching effects. In Britain, it informed perceptions of landscape in art and literature for years to come. Meanwhile, on the continent, Kant regarded Burke as 'the foremost author' in 'the empirical exposition of aesthetic judgments'."

Heaven is a concept that differs across various belief systems and personal interpretations, but generally speaking, it corresponds to a realm or state of life characterized by the highest levels of fulfillment, happiness, and serenity. This undergraduate thesis aims to explore sublime architecture, which seeks to provide responses to this phenomenon. Such responses aim to offer an integrated approach, to the level of the serenity of a peaceful passing, by utilizing spatial and research-based contextual design for a community's built environment (Perth Central Business District, Western Australia). The research uses both quantitative and qualitative techniques. “Personalized Heaven” delivers an architectural engagement within the individual's interpretations of heaven, by developing a solution in the form of sublime, multi-residential, personalized, and inspired by the various understanding of self-fulfillment. Through fostering each individual desires, this architectural hypothesis helps shelter a serene and peaceful passing for the terminally ill."
