"This book enables those who are involved in genomics research, whether as researcher, participant or policy maker, to understand the ethical issues currently developing in this field and to participate actively in these important debates. A clear account is given of how science and technology are outstripping the capacity of previous ethical regulations to cope with current issues, together with practical illustrations of possible ways forward. Key ethical ideas are presented, drawing on the history of research regulation and on an account of the particular challenges arising in the field of genomics. The book uses a grounded, practical approach to explaining ethical concepts and issues which is geared to enhancing interdisciplinary dialogue. Its broad approach to ethical issues includes relevant considerations from social psychology and there is a particular emphasis on understanding the problems of ethical regulations and practice in the institutional and social context of research.
The philosophical study of compassion, as proposed by Martha Nussbaum, is particularly pertinent in the contemporary context, given the prevalence of dehumanization in social interactions and the devaluation of human values in the digital age. In light of these circumstances, it is imperative that humans develop a humanitarian moral reasoning system that is grounded in the fundamental tenets of reality, learning, and the management of moral action. The critical study and literature review method, based on the principle of reductive explanation, is applied in the analysis of compassion, which encompasses suffering and vulnerability. The comprehensive philosophical analysis is based on the fundamental premise that compassion is the capacity to suffer together, alongside the desire to make sense of life, in order to achieve moral transformation. This research demonstrates that the suffering of others can become a moral obligation as a result of the application of cognition, affection and conation through the principles of responsibility, self-awareness and presence in the phenomenon of suffering. In this way, compassion can be seen as a transformative moral technology, providing a framework for understanding life and a basis for moral action. Ultimately, this research reestablishes compassion to its original meaning, that is, the capacity to suffer or coexist with suffering, with an open and integrated moral framework. This particularity situates compassion and suffering as the commitment and moral wisdom of humanity."

"This book pleads for an urgent turn towards directly addressing injustice as a reality that requires pressingly needed arguments and proposals to inspire realistic public health policies and programs based on an ethics of protection. Ever since Hobbes, all shades of political philosophy accept that the basic obligation of the ruling power is to protect its subjects. The ethics of protection emphasizes aiding the needy and the disempowered in obtaining access to basic goods and services related to health-care. Public health is called upon to fulfill protective obligations to guarantee disease prevention and medical services to the population, taking special care to safeguard those unable to cover their health-care needs in market-oriented medical services and institutions. The bioethics of protection developed in this text presents specific and explicit guide-lines to assure that protective public health actions be efficacious (problem-solving), efficient (sustainable cost/benefit relation) and ethically sound (respecting human rights and the common weal). These guide-lines are designed to give ethical support and justification to public health policies even when they require some unavoidable limitations of individual autonomy to promote social health benefits."
