"While the first edition of this textbook was based on a one-year course in computational physics with a rather limited scope, its extent has been increased substantially in the third edition, offering the possibility to select from a broader range of computer experiments and to deepen the understanding of the important numerical methods. The computer experiments have always been a central part of my concepts for this book. Since Java applets, which are very convenient otherwise, have become more or less deprecated and their usage in a browser is no longer recommended for security issues, I decided to use standalone Java programs instead and to rewrite all of the old examples. These can also been edited and compiled with the “netbeans” environment and offer the same possibilities to generate a graphical user interface in short time."

"This book was inspired by the general observation that the great theories of modern physics are based on simple and transparent underlying mathematical structures – a fact not usually emphasized in standard physics textbooks – which makes it easy for mathematicians to understand their basic features. It is a textbook on quantum theory intended for advanced undergraduate or graduate students: mathematics students interested in modern physics, and physics students who are interested in the mathematical background of physics and are dissatisfied with the level of rigor in standard physics courses. More generally, it offers a valuable resource for all mathematicians interested in modern physics, and all physicists looking for a higher degree of mathematical precision with regard to the basic concepts in their field."

"This second edition of an extremely well-received book presents more than 250 nonrelativistic quantum mechanics problems of varying difficulty with the aim of providing students didactic material of proven value, allowing them to test their comprehension and mastery of each subject. The coverage is extremely broad, from themes related to the crisis of classical physics through achievements within the framework of modern atomic physics to lively debated, intriguing aspects relating to, for example, the EPR paradox, the Aharonov-Bohm effect, and quantum teleportation. Compared with the first edition, a variety of improvements have been made and additional topics of interest included, especially focusing on elementary potential scattering. The problems themselves range from standard and straightforward ones to those that are complex but can be considered essential because they address questions of outstanding importance or aspects typically overlooked in primers. The book offers students both an excellent tool for independent learning and a ready-reference guide they can return to later in their careers."

"This textbook presents basic numerical methods and applies them to a large variety of physical models in multiple computer experiments. Classical algorithms and more recent methods are explained. Partial differential equations are treated generally comparing important methods, and equations of motion are solved by a large number of simple as well as more sophisticated methods. Several modern algorithms for quantum wavepacket motion are compared. The first part of the book discusses the basic numerical methods, while the second part simulates classical and quantum systems. Simple but non-trivial examples from a broad range of physical topics offer readers insights into the numerical treatment but also the simulated problems. Rotational motion is studied in detail, as are simple quantum systems. A two-level system in an external field demonstrates elementary principles from quantum optics and simulation of a quantum bit. Principles of molecular dynamics are shown. Modern bounda
ry element methods are presented in addition to standard methods, and waves and diffusion processes are simulated comparing the stability and efficiency of different methods. A large number of computer experiments is provided, which can be tried out even by readers with no programming skills. Exercises in the applets complete the pedagogical treatment in the book. In the third edition Monte Carlo methods and random number generation have been updated taking recent developments into account. Krylov-space methods for eigenvalue problems are discussed in much more detail. The wavelet transformation method has been included as well as simple applications to continuum mechanics and convection-diffusion problems. Lastly, elementary quantum many-body problems demonstrate the application of variational and Monte-Carlo methods.

"Since the previous fourth edition has received quite a positive response from students as well as teachers, we have decided to extend the contents and improve some chapters for pedagogical reasons. In particular, we have rewritten Chap. 33, which is now entitled, “Classical Geometric Phases: Foucault and Euler.” However, most importantly, we have added a new chapter, Chap. 38: “The Usefulness of Lie Brackets: From Classical and Quantum Mechanics to Quantum Electrodynamics.” We emphasize the usefulness of the Lie brackets in classical and quantum mechanics up to quantum electrodynamics. Especially many dynamical systems with (gauge) constraints can equally be treated in the time development with noncanonical variables and Hamiltonians. This is convincingly demonstrated for the electron propagation function in a constant magnetic field in three and four dimensions. We also have attempted to remove the inevitable typos from the text and formulas."

Photoproduction of double pion is a process in particle physics, where the interaction between a photon and a nucleon results in the production of two pions. A similar process occurs in photoproduction of double kaon , leading to the formation of two kaons. In this context, the obtained invariant amplitude will form the basis for computational analysis of the squared invariant amplitude in the phenomena of double-pion and double-kaon photoproduction using FeynCalc, a computational package of Mathematica based on the principles of quantum field theory and Feynman diagrams. This calculation includes the evaluation of contributions from different diagrams and integration over the relevant phase space. This analysis plays a crucial role in deepening the understanding of electromagnetic interactions in particle physics, especially in the case of meson production at high energies."

"Computational modeling is emerging as a powerful new approach to study and manipulate biological systems. Multiple methods have been developed to model, visualize, and rationally alter systems at various length scales, starting from molecular modeling and design at atomic resolution to cellular pathways modeling and analysis. Higher time and length scale processes, such as molecular evolution, have also greatly benefited from new breeds of computational approaches. This book provides an overview of the established computational methods used for modeling biologically and medically relevant systems."
