This research is about housing phenomenon conducted by some Javanese migrants in Balikpapan. They are young single migrants and their respective relatives who are members of the household unit. This study aims to understand this phenomenon as a housing problem in architecture. This study sees housing in diversity and complexity and pays attention to micro aspects and the socio-cultural dimensions of human life. This is explored through the variety of households and families as well as the life courses. This research relies on a perspective that sees the house as an existence, by investigating the existence of the human actors and uncovering their idea of housing. This research employs qualitative research methods and specifically Grounded Theory. The actors name this activity as “nderek” and it can be seen as a coresidency. However, “nderek” differs from other co-residency variants in terms of the type of kinship relationship, the form of support between these relatives, and a certain stage of life. “Nderek” is a housing and also dwelling, which specifically refers to the idea of dwelling according to Heidegger. “Nderek” as a dwelling conveys understanding that through sorge (care) – a fundamental characteristic of dwelling, as in this case is sharing between relatives in nurturing young people towards “mentas” – the actors do not present dwelling that is bounded in one geographic location, but on the gamut of connectedness and openness between two houses and two areas."

ABSTRACT
Informal settlements have become one of the most important issues facing urban areas in Indonesia, DKI Jakarta in particular. As the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta is the main destination for migrants who expect job opportunities and economy improvement for a more decent life. However, low-income factor and government limitations in providing adequate housing, encouraged them to live in informal settlement. This settlement become a space that accommodates the needs of migrants with socio-economic constraints to be able to adjust to city life, through the provision of housing. In reality, the government tends to consider informal settlement as a disruption to urban development, therefore the policy that is often carried out is eviction. Using urban informality as a main concept, this study tries to change the negative perspectives on informal settlements by highlighting at its potential and contribution to the city. Through the Kampung Muka case study as an informal settlement in the city center, it turns out that this settlement is not only as an alternative housing solution for migrants with socio-economic constraints, but also contributes to the development of the surrounding formal sector. The findings reveal income and financing methods significantly impact ability to pay for housing (Income: p=0.000, Financing Method: p=0.007). Employment status emerges as the most influential factor in housing transition process (p=0.015). These results indicate that financial stability and employment opportunities play a crucial role in facilitating the housing transition. Spatially, it is observed that residents tend to relocate within the same sub-district when they possess favourable financial conditions. However, individuals who cannot afford to purchase a house within the city centre often opt for more affordable alternatives in the southern areas. In comprehen, this research highlights the significance of developing housing options that are accessible to various segments of society, thereby ensuring that housing and urban development are beneficial to all residents."

"Housing problems in urban areas are very critical. The increased population growth in DKI Jakarta and the high migration rate from rural to urban areas cause slums. Slums are generated because many households do not have place to live and populate in unauthorized and inappropriate regions. More than 50% of households in DKI Jakarta have yet to own any housing property. In addition, the housing backlog in DKI Jakarta reached 302.319 in 2017. Therefore, housing problems in urban areas are very critical. One way to overcome this issue is to provide a public rental housing program for relocated and general residents with low income—the relocated residents' objective of moving to public rental housing, as they are the victims. The residents lost their livelihoods, the economy was challenging, and it took time to get a job. So, relocated residents in rental public housing are known to have high overdue rent. Previous research about the effectiveness of relocating to public rental accommodations rental public lodgings is minimal. Therefore, public housings create higher rent due in Jakarta. This research's objective is to compare the relocated and general residents in terms of rent overdue in DKI Jakarta public housing. This research analyzes demographic data and public housing rent overdue in 2022. The method used in this research is quantitative with Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression. The analyzed regression shows that rental public housing status influences rent overdue, and residents with the status relocated residents are more prone to pay the rent overdue, compared to the public residents."
