Platt, Rutherford H.
"The intersection between geography and law is a critical yet often overlooked element of land-use decisions, with a widespread impact on how societies use the land, water, and biodiversity around them. Land Use and Society, Third Edition is a clear and compelling guide to the role of law in shaping patterns of land use and environmental management. Originally published in 1996 and revised in 2004, this third edition has been updated with data from the 2010 U.S. Census and revised with the input of academics and professors to address the changing issues in land use, policy, and law today. Land Use and Society, Third Edition retains the historical approach of the original text while providing a more concise and topical survey of the evolution of urban land use regulation, from Europe in the Middle Ages through the present day United States. Rutherford Platt examines the "nuts and bolts" of land use decision-making in the present day and analyzes key players, including private landowners, local and national governments, and the courts. This third edition is enhanced by a discussion of the current trends and issues in land use, from urban renewal and demographic shifts in cities to the growing influence of local governance in land use management. Land Use and Society, Third Edition is a vital resource for any student seeking to understand the intersection between law, politics, and the natural world. While Platt examines specific rules, doctrines, and practices from an American context, an understanding of the role of law in shaping land use decisions will prove vital for students, policymakers, and land use managers around the world."

This undergraduate thesis discusses about coal mining in Kutai, East Kalimantan and the impact on social and economic aspects in 1860 - 1926. When the Dutch East Indies government came to Kutai, to negotiate agreements and concessions in Kutai, then at that time the Dutch is entitled to retain some regions in Kutai. By doing so, the Dutch immediately instruct geological experts to conduct a search of land to own the content coal seam, and it was found in Bukit Pelarang. Kutai coal mining began in 1860, the Dutch immediately started to exploit coal and produce a number of production was satisfactory. However, in 1872, the Dutch closed the mine because of the amount of production continues to decline and is certainly detrimental. In 1888, the Company entered the foreign capital called Oost Borneo Maatschappij to continue mining coal in Kutai.
The result was quite satisfactory and the peak of the highest production amount achieved in 1926, this is due to the addition of OBM doing porters mining. With the mining of coal in Kutai, would have caused social and economic impact on the surrounding, such as increased population growth, changes in the livelihoods of surrounding communities, the manufacture of infrastructure and public facilities, and the impact of Kutai who received royalties from coal mining in Kutai."

"This paper aims at analysing the ideological, political, and legal background of urban planning on the basis of empirical research on the rezoning of industrial sites in Balmain in Sydney, which has become a contentious issue in recent years. Balmain became a test for the state government policy on urban consolidation. The rezoning in Balmain became a major issue because several giant corporations (Monsanto, Caltex, Unilever, and Balmain Power Station) were involved, with the approval of state government of NSW, against the residents groups and local government of Leichhardt. The state government, the council, the developers, and the residents have been fighting for the right to decide the case. It is interesting to examine in what legal based the laws, the ideological, and political contested on the urban planning. This chapter will analyse a structure of the urban planning from the legal perspective and the theory of the social function of urban planning in Sydney generally, and in some detail will ers to the Balmain case."
