"Globalisation is more complex than ever. The effects of the global financial crisis and increased inequality have spurred anti-globalisation sentiment in many countries and encouraged the adoption of populist and inward-looking policies. This has led to some surprising results: Duterte, Brexit and Trump, to name a few. In Indonesia, the disappointment with globalisation has led to rising protectionism, a rejection of foreign interference in the name of nationalism, and economic policies dominated by calls for self-sufficiency. Meanwhile, human trafficking and the abuse of migrant workers show the dark side of globalisation. In this volume, leading experts explore key issues around globalisation, nationalism and sovereignty in Indonesia. Topics include the history of Indonesia's engagement with the world, Indonesia's stance on the South China Sea and the re-emergence of nationalism. The book also examines the impact of globalisation on poverty and inequality, labour markets and people, especially women."

The focus of this research is the construction of nationalism of border community in the context of social communication. This research using symbolic interactionism theoretical framework developed by Mead 1967 regarding self concept and construction of social reality by Berger Luckmann 1966 . The paradigm of this research is constructivist and it is qualitative research. The data were collected by conducting in depth interviews with border community in Aji Kuning Village, Sebatik Tengah District, Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan. This research yielded identification of self concept in relation to the nationalism of border community in the process of nationalism construction in the context of social communication in the forms of compromise. This self concept in the forms of compromise is devided into two 2 categories, namely compromise in certain things or limited compromise and compromise in all things or unlimited compromise. The concept of self tends to show up in the assumption of a role as a member of Indonesian nation. This self concept also leads them in communicating and passing down the subjective reality to their environment."

ABSTRACT
Nationalism is an imagination of similarities. Nationalism is not natural, nationalism is the result of disciplinary process and routine. Along with modernity, the movement of people to various regions in the world becomes a new global experience along with the development of the idea ofpassports, citizenship, and the culture of nation-states. In the diaspora space, the media has an important role in transmitting images of similarity as a group. The media creates a space that brings the Youth Indonesian Diaspora Student (PPDI) which is deterritorialized seems closer to their homeland. In Thailand, the media make them feel like a group even though they come from various ethnic backgrounds. Daily, they form the imagination of nationalism due to three reasons. First, mass education as an extension of modernity that creates memories of national cultural traditions and ideas of national culture. Second, alienation of ethnic identity as a consequence of globalization and modernity which obscures ethnic attributes in social relations in the diaspora space. Third, media globalization creates a circuit of similarities of national symbols in the diaspora media space. These three instruments live daily with PPDI. The media builds PPDI nationalism and they use it as a way to maintain social relations as a modern society in the diaspora space."
