"Mental health is one of Indonesia’s public health development goals. The Pangandaran District Administration of West Java is an expanded district that actively carries out various development programs, including mental health programs. This study aimed to identify public knowledge about mental health in Pangandaran District using quantitative descriptive method. The research population comprised residents of the Pangandaran District, and a sample was collected via cluster multistage sampling technique. The sample was gradually determined in the order of subdistricts, villages, subvillages, community units, and neighborhood units. The total sample was composed of 113 respondents. The questionnaire was developed based on theories and concepts on public mental health and distributed to participants after validity and reliability tests were conducted. The construct validity test result was between 0.303 and 0.764, which meant that all items were valid. The Kuder-Richardson 20 formula was used to test reliability, and the reliability coefficient was 0.887. Mathematical calculations were used for data analysis; data are presented as frequency distributions. In this study, 61.10% of the respondents had “less” knowledge, 33.59% had “good” knowledge, and the remaining 5.30% had “enough” knowledge of mental health. The results suggest that the local government should provide mental health education for the residents. For educational institutions, mental health programs should be a fundamental offering in Indonesian society."

This literature review analyzes mental health promotion as a strategy to reduce stigma towards people with severe mental illness (ODGJ). The background of this research is the existing stigmatization towards people with severe mental illness (ODGJ) in Indonesia that influences discriminative action towards them such as shackling, exclusion, and the other discriminatory behaviour in our society. In reviewing this topic, study towards previous relevant research has been done in this literature review. There are 15 (fifteen) previous studies that are relevant with the concepts of stigma towards people with severe mental illness (ODGJ), mental health promotion, and strategy in reducing stigma. There are 3 (three) reference articles in analyzing stigma towards people with severe mental illness (ODGJ), 5 (five) reference articles about mental health promotion, and 2 (two) reference articles about strategy in reducing stigma. The method used in this literature review is integrative review by analyzing the strengths, limitations, and substances of the studied reference articles. Based on the analysis, the negative public stigma towards people with severe mental illness is existing due to the lack of information people’s knowledge about mental health and mental illness in our society. Therefore, mental health promotion could be considered as a strategy to reduce stigma and increase empathy towards people with mental illness (ODGJ). This literature review concludes that a mental health promotion is potential as a strategy to reduce stigma through various methods such as socialization, counseling, and even practical activities such as roleplay and direct contact with people with severe mental illness (ODGJ). Mental health promotion through practical activities shows the decreasing of public stigma towards people with severe mental illness and the increasing of empathy towards them. Also, mental health promotion is required to strengthen the capacity and self-efficacy of health practitioners to deliver mental health socialization or counseling to the society. In addition, mental health promotion could involve social worker roles as educator, group facilitator, and activist by involving cultural competence and paying attention to cultural aspects such as beliefs, arts, moral values, laws, customs, habits, and other capabilities that have already become the guidance of society. Mental health promotion needs to be conducted by using languages that can be understood and relevant to the culture in the society in order to ensure that the information is well-delivered and accepted."
