Indonesia is ranked 7th with the highest number of neonatal deaths worldwide. About 75% of all neonatal deaths occur in the early neonatal period. Early neonatal deaths can be prevented through access to health services through neonatal visits. This study aims to determine the relationship between first neonatal visits and early neonatal mortality in Indonesia. This is a quantitative study using a case-control study design by analyzing secondary data from the 2017 IDHS. This study found a significant relationship between first neonatal visits and early neonatal mortality [OR=8.23, 95% CI=2.76- 24,55]. The risk of early neonatal mortality was found to be higher in rural areas; male babies; birth order 2-3 and ≥4; birth spacing <24 months and >35 months, and an only child; birth weight <2500 grams; mother low education; gave birth at <20 years and >35 years; used antenatal care <6 times; did not receive tetanus toxoid immunization; and did not give birth in a health care facility. It was found that place of residence, sex, birth order, birth weight, age at birth, tetanus toxoid immunization, and place of delivery were confounding variables that influenced the relationship between the use of first neonatal visits and early neonatal mortality."

Neonatal mortality is an important indicator of child health and basis for assessing country’s health status. Neonatal mortality accounts for 2/3 of infant mortality. According WHO in 2020, 75% of neonatal mortality occur in the first week after birth and about 1 million infants die in the first 24 hours after birth. To prevent neonatal mortality in that period were by providing first neonatal visit service. Study aims to determined the relationship between first neonatal visit service with neonatal mortality in Indonesia. Design study was cross sectional using 2017 IDHS data. The sample was women of childbearing (15-49 years) who gave birth the last child born alive and not twins. Research analysis used complex sample with logistic regression of risk factors test. The results showed that neonatal mortality was 2.3%, coverage of KN 1 was 81.8% and newborns who received complete KN 1 were 35.4%. There was an interaction between KN 1 services with caesarean delivery and neonatal mortality so that neonatal mortality in incomplete KN 1 with caesarean section is 1,4 times greater and neonatal mortality in incomplete KN 1 with non-caesarean section is 4,4 times greater than death neonatal in KN 1 is complete and not caesarean. Therefore, increasing the completeness of KN 1 services is very necessary in reducing neonatal mortality, such as providing essential neonatal guidelines, health promotion related to the importance of newborn care. In addition, it is also important to encourage matenal to delivery in health facilities so that newborns can be monitored."
