"This article deals with Panji stories from Java, their original home. It begins with an examination of Panji as he appears in the Wangbaŋ Wideya, one of the earliest extant Panji stories, representing the culture of Majapahit and its successor states. It then goes on to survey a number of Panji compositions written by Pakubuwana IV, Sunan of Surakarta from 1788-1820, which reveal that Pakubuwana clearlyidentified with Panji, as opposed to say, Islamic models, or Western models, for the political realm possibly available at that time. The article goes on to look at the somewhat later writings of Yasadipura II (1756-1844) and Dipanagara, who led the 1825-1830 Java War against the Dutch. The former has a markedly bureaucratic, non-mythic approach to government. The latter does draw heavily on mythic validation, for instance from indigenous Javanese deities and from Islamic figures, but here too there is a notable lack of reference to Panji as an ideal. Panji theatre across Java and at the popular level is briefly surveyed, as is the extensive export of Panji stories to Malaysia, mainland Southeast Asia, and even possibly to Japan – which would suggest that they are far older than hitherto suspected."

"ABSTRAKPenelitian ini mengkaji teks Serat Gandakusuma koleksi Ruang Naskah Perpustakaan Universitas Indonesia. Fokus kajian ini secara filologis adalah untuk menyajikan suntingan teks Serat Gandakusuma yang telah dibersihkan dari kesalahan dan diterjemahkan sehingga dapat dipahami isinya oleh pembaca pada masa kini. Secara kesastraan, penelitian ini menyoroti karakter teks sebagai karya sastra alegoris bermuatan sufisme Jawa yang mengisahkan tentang perjalanan spiritual tokoh Raden Gandakusuma di dalam mencapai kesempurnaan. Penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana metrum-metrum tembang macapat yang digunakan di dalam teks mewujudkan perjalanan sufi Raden Gandakusuma, serta bagaimana peran perempuan di dalam mendukung perjalanan sufi yang dilakukan oleh Raden Gandakusuma.

ABSTRACTThis research examines the text of Serat Gandakusuma from the collection of The Manuscript Section of The Library of Universitas Indonesia. Philologically, this study focuses on the presentation of the edition text of Serat Gandakusuma which has been cleaned from its error and translated in Indonesian language so that its content can be understood by today rsquo;s readers. As in the perspective of literature, this research focuses in the text rsquo;s character as an allegorical text which contains the concepts of Javanese Sufism through the story of Raden Gandakusuma and his spiritual journey to reach a true perfection. This research analyzes how the macapat meters in the text actualizes the sufi journey of Raden Gandakusuma, and also how the role of women in supporting the sufi journey of Raden Gandakusuma."
