"Scholarly attention for Old Javanese literature so far has mainly focused on poetry. The apparently simple nature of narrative prose texts, while making them excellent sources for linguistic and lexicographic research, at the same time denies them any literary value. In this article an impression is given of the art of storytelling in one Old Javanese prose story, taken from the Adiparwa of around A.D. 1000. Quite unexpectedly, a sophisticated tradition unfolds in which a rich variety of devices enables the storyteller to create a meaningful world of words."

"Fonotaktik Bahasa Jawa Kuno (BJK) telah dijabarkan oleh Oglobin (1991), Mardiwarsito dan Kridalaksana (2012), serta Suarka (2018). Pada umumnya penelitian tersebut menjelaskan fonotaktik BJK berdasarkan jumlah pola fonotaktik yang ditemukan beserta dengan contoh kata yang mewakili setiap pola persukuan tersebut. Akan tetapi, ketiga penelitian tersebut belum menjelaskan mengenai jenis fonem tertentu yang berdistribusi pada pola persukuan yang ada pada BJK. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan distribusi fonem Jawa Kuno pada kata bersuku satu. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif. Sumber data yang digunakan berupa kamus Jawa Kuno-Indonesia (Zoetmulder & Robson, 1995) dan kamus daring BJK http://sealang.net/ojed/. Penelitian ini menggunakan klasifikasi pola persukuan BJK oleh Suarka (2018); terdapat 11 pola fonotaktik pada BJK. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan mencari dan mencatat kata yang memuat ke-11 pola persukuan BJK pada kamus Jawa Kuno-Indonesia (Zoetmulder & Robson, 1995). Data dikelompokkan berdasarkan jenis fonem yang menempati pola persukuan yang ada. Penelitian ini menghasilkan jenis fonem yang cenderung berdistribusi menempati posisi pola persukuan pada kata bersuku satu. Distribusi fonem pada BJK memiliki ciri khas, yakni dua konsonan yang sama dapat berada dalam satu suku kata sekaligus.

The phonotactics of Old Javanese has been described by Oglobin (1991), Mardiwarsito and Kridalaksana (2012), and Suarka (2018). In general, these studies explain the phonotactics of Old Javanese based on the number of phonotactic patterns found along with examples of words that represent each of these tribal patterns. However, the three studies have not explained the specific types of phonemes that are distributed in the tribal patterns in Old Javanese. The purpose of this research is to describe the distribution of Old Javanese phonemes in monosyllabic words. This research uses a qualitative method. The data sources used are the Old Javanese-Indonesian dictionary (Zoetmulder & Robson, 1995) and the online dictionary of the Old Javanese language http://sealang.net/ojed/. This research uses the classification of Old Javanese tribal patterns by Suarka (2018); there are 11 phonotactic patterns in Old Javanese. Data collection was done by searching and recording words containing the 11 Old Javanese tribal patterns in the Old Javanese-Indonesian dictionary (Zoetmulder & Robson, 1995). The data were grouped based on the type of phonemes that occupy the existing tribal patterns. This research produces a type of phoneme that tends to be distributed to occupy the position of the tribal pattern in monosyllabic words."
