"ABSTRAKThis paper aims to describe qualitative research that began to develop in the field of accounting. Qualitative descriptive method is used to collect data and describe qualitative research in accounting. The results of research can add to the understanding of qualitative research in accounting. Qualitative research provides freedom from the limit of the deductive hypothesis testing obsession that allows to investigate issues and questions that have been neglected by the dominant research paradigm. Assimilating accounting disciplines with other disciplines may open up opportunities for qualitative research."

"Penelitian ini memuat situasi yang melatarbelakangi ketergantungan seseorang terhadap penggunaan narkoba, sikap yang ditampilkan setelah terinfeksi HIV/AIDS serta cara partisipan memaknai kondisi diri dan lingkungan/keluarga terdekatnya serta tindakan-tindakan yang dilakukan ketika menyelesaikan masalah. Teori explanatory style dari Peterson & Seligman (1987) digunakan berdasarkan dimensi internal-external, stability-unstability/transient dan global-specific melalui penelitian kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Bertujuan untuk melihat pemahaman mereka terhadap kondisi yang ada hingga cara-cara yang dilakukan untuk memaknai masalah tersebut. Hasil penelitian didapatkan bahwa sebagian besar dari mereka menggunakan pola eksternal, stability dan global dalam memahami ketergantungannya pada narkoba, mereka masih mengalami kesulitan untuk melepaskan diri dari ketergantungannya terhadap narkoba walaupun sadar akan dampak yang ditimbulkan. Kesulitan untuk memahami keadaan diri terinfeksi HIV/AIDS disebabkan oleh banyak faktor. Seperti dukungan sosial, keadaan partisipan saat ini, adanya stigma di masyarakat yang membatasi gerak hidup mereka. Keterbatasan dalam penelitian ini adalah penggunaan partisipan yang hanya diambil pada satu buah panti rehabilitasi narkoba. Padahal pemahaman yang muncul dapat berbeda bila diteliti pada panti rehabilitasi lain, partisipan perempuan ataupun individu yang tidak mengikuti program rehabilitasi. Selanjutnya ditemukan pula bahwa rasa tanggung jawab pada diri sendiri dapat menjadi kekuatan tersendiri bagi pengguna narkoba yang terinfeksi HIV/AIDS untuk memahami kebutuhan dirinya sendiri.

This study analyzise the background of people?s situation on drugs dependency, their attitudes emerge after infected by HIV/AIDS, and ways to give self-meaning to themselves and their surroundings including actions to deal with their life problems. Style explanatory theory from Peterson & Seligman (1987) which is based on internal-external dimension, stability-unstability/transient dan global-specific dimentions was used. This study was a in qualitative research with case study method. The objective is to explore the understanding of drug users with HIV/AIDS. The outcome from this research shows that most of the subjects were using external, stabilized and global patterns from explanatory theory in order to understand their dependecies on drugs and how hard for them to release from it eventhough they knew that is harmful. The drug users who were infected by HIV/AIDS were hard, to understand their situations. This was caused by many factors such as social support, their physical and psychological conditions, public stigma that limit ways to facing their life. The constraints in this research were that all subjects were from one rehabilitation centre. Whereas, other understanding can be different in other rehabilitation centres which is women participant, or people who were not under any rehabilitation program. Furthermore, the researcher found that a sense of responsibility to oneself can be a moral support for any subject to understand his/her needs and conditions."

"Semiotics is a science of signs and/or sign systems. Which is essentially a theoretical approach to communication and aims to establish widely applicable principles. The problem is that it is a too theoretical and speculative approach. The semioticians make no attempt to prove or disprove their theories in an objective, scientific way. Semiotic is an application of linguistic methods to objects other than languange. A semiotic approach is to understand an approach to the text of the context. Semiotics is created by the representatives of a narrow circle of scientific disciplines, first of all, of logic, architecture, arts, and linguistics."

"In general, the difference between qualitative and quantitative research canbe seen from the characteristics of data used (measured versus observed), datacollection methods (structured interview versus in-depth interview, participantobservation), and clearly, from the method of analysis. Example is quantitativeresearch with quantitative guidance (level of significance in hypothesis measuring,factor analysis in creating construct validity estimation of a variable measuring,and so on). Indeed, we need to analyze some of the questions related with thediffering between both, that include: do all qualitative research are researcheswhich emphasized in subjectivity and reflexivity? Do all qualitative researchemergent or exploratory in nature? Do all qualitative research ideographic innature? Isn?t there one research that nomothetic? How about the results foundusing proposition from the perspective of social construction of reality? Some of theanswers from the questions above will be discussed in this article."

"Metode penelitian kualitatif secara luas telah digunakan dalam berbagai penelitian sosial termasuk sosiologi. Terdapat beberapa kesimpangsiuran dalam memahami metode kualitatif yang seringkali dianggap sebagai pelengkap dari metode kuantitatif. Penelitian pustaka ini ingin mendiskusikan beragam isu terkait dengan kelebihan dan kekurangan dalam metode penelitian kualitatif.Kami menyimpulkan bahwa metode kualitatif secara potensial dapat berguna dalam menyumbangkan pembangunan teori-teori ilmu sosial serta metodologi dalam konteks ke-Indonesiaan. Lebih dari itu, penggunaan metode penelitian kualitatif dapat membawa ilmu sosial khususnya sosiologi di Indonesia berada dalam posisi setara dalam dialog peradaban dengan sesama komunitas akademik di Barat.

Qualitative method has been widely be adopted in research practices in Indonesian tradition of social sciences including sociology. However, it seems there is misunderstanding on the method that is seen as additional to the quantitative one. This literature study intend to discuss related issues to the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative method.We do conclude here, that the method has productive potential for fostering the develomment of social theories as well as methodology in the context of Indonesian world. Hence, it is possible to bring Indonesian social sciences especially sociology into equal position of future dialog with the counterparts from the Western communities. "
