"Area studies, including Asian and Southeast Asian studies, in the post-Cold War era have been facing an epochal challenge that is rooted in two conditions: on the one hand, the end of the Cold War and the fading geopolitical rationale, and on the other, the emergence of the technology-driven transformation of the global economy and society. The consequences thus far are paradoxical: 1) While the technology-led transformation needs a workforce with critical and innovative abilities, higher education becomes more hyper-utilitarian; 2) While the transformation instigates increasing diversity of identities in global cultures, many countries thrive for STEM education at the expense of learning languages and cultures, including area studies which are essential for diversity. Southeast Asian studies programs need to change in response to these new conditions. These changing conditions and paradoxes, nevertheless, take different forms and degrees in the American, European and Asian academies, thanks to their different histories of higher education. The prospects for Southeast Asian Studies in these various academies are likely to be different too. "

"In a security perspective, the territory of Indonesia and the Southeast Asia region as a whole are strategic areas in economic, political and military aspects. This condition also has complex potential challenges and risks for creating tension among countries. After the Korean War and World War II the development of the crisis on the Korean Peninsula continued. North Korea chose to build and to increase its military capabilities. Indonesia as one of the adjacent countries to the Korean Peninsula, could get an impact to the sovereignty and security of the country. Especially caused by North Korea’s nuclear testing activities. This study aims to determine the form of Indonesian Defense Diplomacy and how the roles of the involved actors in responding to the issue. By using qualitative research methods, this study discusses the issue with constructivist theory and the concept of defense diplomacy for the analysis. The result of this research is a form of Indonesian defense diplomacy in response to the crisis on the Korean Peninsula"

The domination of patriarchy has resulted in discrimination, exploitation, and violence against women. One of the form of a wide-spread violence against women that has become a global issue is women trafficking. Women trafficking is a very complex issue, because its aspects involve labor, migration, poverty, and crime. Southeast Asia, which is populated by developing countries, is the region where women trafficking is most-spread. United Nations, with its UNODC and UNIAP projects, has been making efforts to suppress the women trafficking in Southeast Asia. However, the effort to suppress the women trafficking in Southeast Asia are not relayed solely upon United Nations. ASEAN, as the regional international organization, also makes efforts to suppress the women trafficking in Southeast Asia. In studying the role of ASEAN in suppressing the women trafficking in Southeast Asia, it is important to know the rule of international law regarding the suppression of women trafficking, ASEANs efforts in suppressing the women trafficking in Southeast Asia, and the application of the rule of international law regarding the suppression of women trafficking, based on Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, in each ASEAN member states legislation. These problems will be answered through a juridical-normative research, thus it can be concluded that ASEAN must support the implementation of international human rights principles in Southeast Asia that will suppress the women trafficking."

"In March 4, 2011, Timor Leste applied for membership in ASEAN through formal application conveying said intent. This is an intriguing case, as Timor Leste, is a Southeast Asian country that applied for ASEAN Membership after the shift of ASEAN to acknowledge ASEAN Charter as its constituent instrument. Therefore, this research paper aims to provide a descriptive overview upon the requisites of becoming ASEAN Member State under the prevailing regulations. The research paper focuses on the research questions, namely 1 To what extent does the admission of new members in international organizations regulated 2 How is the application process for the admission into ASEAN regulated in regards to Timor Leste 3 How is the membership admission system in ASEAN will influence the development of ASEAN as an regional organization Normatively, the research paper examines the distinctions between ASEAN Declaration and ASEAN Charter as to how it governs membership admission of new members. The substantive requirements of Timor Leste to become the eleventh ASEAN Member State are also surveyed in the hopes that it will provide a comprehensive understanding as why Timor Leste has not been accepted into ASEAN. Through this, it is to be noted how the membership system in ASEAN will develop its own existence as a regional organization.
