"Ever since its first coinage by James Truslow Adams in 1931, The American Dream has been long held as the everymans life, which promises success through hard work and stresses the preservation of collective ideals to all Americans regardless of each individuals differences. The Dreams endurance is further strengthened by its frequent presence in American popular culture. However, the life and times of the Americans have greatly changed since the Dreams inception, and this raises the question of todays state of the Dream. Examining The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and its main character Andrea Sachs, this research investigates whether the films depiction of the American Dream is in accordance to Adams original concept. By dissecting the Dreams basic concepts and observing its manifestations in the film, this research argues that the film provides a radically metamorphosed version of the American Dream, in which it is now a mere justification for selfish endeavours and has become a tool of oppression to those who seek it.

ABSTRACT
Ever since its first coinage by James Truslow Adams in 1931, The American Dream has been long held as the everyman s life, which promises success through hard work and stresses the preservation of collective ideals to all Americans regardless of each individual s differences. The Dream s endurance is further strengthened by its frequent presence in American popular culture. However, the life and times of the Americans have greatly changed since the Dream s inception, and this raises the question of today s state of the Dream. Examining The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and its main character Andrea Sachs, this research investigates whether the film s depiction of the American Dream is in accordance to Adams s original concept. By dissecting the Dream s basic concepts and observing its manifestations in the film, this research argues that the film provides a radically metamorphosed version of the American Dream, in which it is now a mere justification for selfish endeavours and has become a tool of oppression to those who seek it."

"ABSTRACT
Willa Cather wrote 12 novels, more than 60 short stories, several poems, and a good number of critical essays. Her writings showed characters from all walks of life, and her settings were in quite different backgrounds and of quite different periods. Her works have never been noisy or self-assertive and yet Willa Cather, as Mildred Bennet said, has not needed a revival in the sense that there has been a Fitzgerald revival, a Sherwood Anderson revival, and a Nathanael West revival. (See Bennet, 1961: vii)
In The World of Willa Cather, Mildred Bennet writes that when Charles Poore reviewed her book in 1951, he wrote that there was no need for a Willa Cather revival "the world has never lost its taste for her excellent writing." She believes that the same assertion can be made quite as confidently today: from the response of a new generation of readers it is evident that the taste has been inherited; the flow of critical writing which began shortly after Miss Cather's death shows no sign of slacking off; and in colleges and universities interest in her life and work is decidedly on the increase . . ." (Bennet, 1961: vii).
Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant, on her first encounter with the works of Willa Cather said that she had "discovered a genuine, first-class work of American fiction, in which a young woman of prairie background had conceived her world with new eyes and had made of it a work of art . . . ." (Sergeant, 1953: 11)
Willa Cather's other biographers have written with much admiration for her works and most of her critics have been generous with their reviews. Even critics who have not seen eye to eye with her have treated her with respect. These critics who have written for and against her have such formidable names like H. L. Mencken, Carl Van Doren, Edmund Wilson, Sinclair Lewis, T. K. Whipple, Joseph Wood Krutch, Rebecca West, E. K. Brown, David Daiches, Elizabeth Moorhead, Louise Bogan, Granville Hicks, Lionel Trilling, Alfred Kazin, Maxwell Geismar, George Schloss, Henry Steele Commager, Morton D. Zabel, Howard Mumford H. Jones, Leon Edel, James Schroeter, and many others. (See Schroeter, 1968).
What is it that pulls so many to Willa Cather? Why has "the world never lost its taste for her excellent writing"? What did Willa Cather "conceive" about her world so much so that she "made of it a work of art"? Upon reading and examining Willa Cather's works, I strongly suggest that the element which attracts most readers to her writing is the "American Dream."
This is the topic I aim to write about in this thesis--Willa Cather and the American Dream. I will show that the works of Willa Cather reflect the American dream, especially the dreams of freedom, success, and the pastoral vision.

Investment in stock exchange has two possibilities for an investor, either to get profit / gain or loss. Naturally, an investor is always looking for profit. The profit that investor needed depends on the ability of investor to value the situation. The situation consist of' the company and other factors surrounding the company itself.
To be able to value the stock, an investor needs information. There are some resources as the basis to value the stock. The resources are taken from rumors, corporate action, rate, inflation, macro economic, financial report / profit and loss, political movement, etc.
Financial report is one of valuable information for investor as basis to sell, buy or hold on stocks. Financial report is an indicator to assess wealth of the company, whether the company result is bad, enough or good.
Many journals reported of higher abnormal return surrounding earning announcement. These journal included in the journals which reported by Beaver, Morse and Daniel. The stock price and volume movement impact on the higher abnormal return surrounding earning announcements.
In this thesis, I tried to replicate the journal that reported by Beaver, Morse and Daniel. The purpose of this replication is to analyze the speed reaction of market in Jakarta Stock Exchange surrounding earning announcements. The main point of my thesis is the abnormal return of stock price and volume surrounding earning announcements starting from January 2005 until June 2006.
I found that there was weakness of price movement and volume movement of stock in Jakarta Stock Exchange surrounding earning announcements. The weakness ctrl' price and volume movement of stock price resulted no significant movement of abnormal return.
I used chi square to test significant with two hypotheses on stock price. The null hypothesis states that each stock has the actual return during period report. The alternative hypothesis states that actual return is not the same during report period. The report period consist of 31 days.
I found that the stocks with null hyphothesis are greater than alternative hypothesis. It means most of the stocks have no significant differentiation on actual return and expected return during report period (31 days).

This thesis describes the movement of the main character named Ahmad Ashmawy Mulloy as Muslim-American terrorist in America in the novel of Terrorist (2006) by John Updike. This thesis also discusses the attitude of Updike towards terrorism that is reflected in this novel. By using theories of the elements of novel and Pierre Bourdieu?s sociological approach with the concepts of field, habitus, and capital, the result of the analysis shows that Ahmad becomes a terrorist because he is affected by his social space in America namely groups of Muslim, non-Muslim, and terrorist group. Ahmad?s movement as a terrorist is in the field of terrorist and Ahmad?s position moves closer to the achievement of martyr position (shahid) (symbolic capital) through some efforts and strategies done by him to implement a plan of jihad with suicide bombing. This movement is stopped because he canceled his intention, realized his mistake (converted, insaf), and decided to get out of the field of terrorist, as a result there is no terrorist bombing and the position of a martyr is not achieved. Based on the study of the movement, the perspective of the position of the three main characters that build the theme of terrorism, and the plot of the novel without bombing, Updike?s attitude towards terrorism in this novel is anti-terrorism.
