"Depiksi gender di media mainstream pada umumnya mengikuti norma-norma dan stereotipe-stereotipe yang konon diatribusikan ke gender tertentu layaknya sebuah peran yang dimana pria dan wanita harus bersikap secara spesifik tergantung dari jenis kelamin mereka berdasarkan apa yang dianggap normal oleh masyarakat tertentu. Acara Steven Universe 2013-sekarang adalah kartun serial yang ditayangkan di saluran Cartoon Network, yang dimana acara tersebut dibuat untuk anak-anak sebagai target demografis mereka. Akan tetapi, walaupun target demografis mereka adalah anak-anak, kartun tersebut mendepiksikan gender dengan cara yang berbeda dibandingkan dengan kartun-kartun yang lain. Melalui lensa lsquo;Gender Performativity rsquo; dari buku Gender Trouble yang ditulis oleh Judith Butler, makalah ini melihat lebih dalam bagaimana kartun Steven Universe mendepiksikan gender, norma gender dan stereotipenya melalui tiga karakter utama dari acara tersebut dan bagaimana cara kartun tersebut mendepiksikan gender dibandingkan dengan cara gender sering didepiksikan di media mainstream.

Depiction of gender in the mainstream media often follows the norms and stereotypes that are often attributed to specific genders, such as gender roles that determine what women and men should be like and how they should behave based on their sex, which often falls within the purview of what a given society considers as normal. Steven Universe 2013-present is a cartoon series that is aired on the channel Cartoon Network, which, by its nature as a cartoon, is designed for and aimed at children to consume. Yet despite its target demographic being children, it stands out among other shows in how it depicts gender. Using the lens of lsquo;Gender Performativity rsquo; by Judith Butler rsquo;s Gender Trouble, this paper examines how Steven Universe depicts gender itself, its norms and stereotypes through the show rsquo;s three main characters and how it contributes to their narrative along with comparing them to how gender is often depicted in mainstream media."

"Dewasa ini, pemain video game online merupakan pencipta yang seutuhnya atas karakter di dalam game yang dimainkan, sekalipun dalam pemilihan gender. Dengan demikian, mereka dapat bermain sebagai gender mereka sendiri atau memilih sebaliknya (silang gender). Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis faktor-faktor yang tersembunyi di balik fenomena persilangan gender, khususnya di kalangan pemain pria di salah satu game online terbesar, Final Fantasy XIV. Berbeda dengan kepercayaan luas yang mana persilangan gender dalam game dipandang sebagai cara untuk mendapatkan keuntungan di dalam game atau untuk ?memandangi bokong wanita saat berlari?, penelitian ini menemukan adanya faktor lain yang tersembunyi. Dengan menggunakan teori psikoanalisis dari Sigmund Freud (1993) dan melalui analisis mendalam dari hasil wawancara, ditemukan beberapa mekanisme pertahanan ego (defence mechanisms) yang mungkin ada di dalam diri pemain.

Players of online video games nowadays have become the gods of their in-game characters, even when it comes to gender selection. Accordingly, it is possible for them to play as their real life gender or to choose the opposite (to cross gender). The aim of this research is to analyse the underlying factors behind the phenomenon of gendercrossing, particularly among male players in one of the large massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPGs), Final Fantasy XIV. In contrast to popular belief in which gender-crossing is seen as a way to receive more in-game advantages or to ?look at female?s butt while running?, this research discovers more than just what meets the eye. Using Sigmund Freud?s psychoanalytic theory (1933) and through a thorough analysis of the interview results, several probable defence mechanisms are found within the players."

"Stereotip gender adalah salah satu isu utama yang ada pada kebanyakan film Disney tentang putri. Perhatian terhadap sifat-sifat konvensional tersebut telah berubah menjadi tindakan untuk menantang peraturan lama dengan menampilkan seorang putri pasca-klasik. Penelitian tentang tindakan wanita menantang stereotip gender dapat ditemukan dengan mudah, namun tindakan yang dilakukan oleh seorang putri Disney pasca-klasik masih terbatas. Oleh karena itu, makalah ini menyajikan analisis mengenai analisis tindakan menantang stereotip gender yang dilakukan oleh Merida dalam film Brave 2012 . Untuk melakukan penelitian ini, penulis menganalisis keseluruhan cerita melalui menonton film tersebut, mengungkapkan tindakan stereotip gender menggunakan teori Linda Brannon, dan mengklasifikasikan tindakan yang menantang stereotip gender dalam film tersebut. Makalah ini memberikan kontribusi baru dalam studi pengkajian stereotip gender pada karakter putri pasca-klasik ciptaan Disney dan mengungkapkan bahwa seorang wanita mungkin tidak lagi menjalankan peran gender konvensional karena beberapa alasan.

Gender stereotype is one of the main issues exist that in most Disney's princess movies. The concern on following conventional traits has been changing to the act of challenging the old rules by featuring a post classical princess. Researches on the act of challenging gender stereotype by a woman can be found easily nevertheless, that action done by a brand new Disney's princess is still limited. Therefore, this paper presents the act of challenging gender stereotype analysis of Merida in Brave 2012 . To conduct this research, the author analyzed the whole story by watching the movie, revealing the act of gender stereotyping using Linda Brannon's theory, and classifying the actions of challenging gender stereotype within the movie. This paper gives a new contribution in the study of gender stereotyping study in a post classical Disney's princess and reveals that a woman may not live the conventional gender role due to some reasons."

"Penelitian ini menganalisis implikasi ideologis dari representasi atas ras dan gender di Modern Family. Dengan menggunakan analisis tekstual melalui close reading, penelitian ini berusaha untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian: bagaimanakah Modern Family melibatkan diri dengan ideologi ras dan gender yang dominan serta apakah implikasi ideologis akhir yang dihasilkan dari keterlibatan tersebut.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Modern Family melanggengkan ideologi ras dan gender yang dominan dan bukannya menentang hal tersebut. Dalam hal ras, Modern Family menujukkan superioritas orang kulit putih dibandingkan orang kulit berwarna. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa dalam penggambaran gendernya, Modern Family melanggengkan ideologi patriarki. Pada akhirnya, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Modern Family menyangkal misinya sendiri untuk menampilkan masyarakat modern Amerika.

This research examines the ideological implications of the representation of race and gender in Modern Family. Utilized with textual analysis through close reading, this research seeks to answer the research questions: how Modern Family engages with the dominant ideology of race and gender and what the final ideological implication of the engagement with the dominant ideology is.The findings of the research indicate that Modern Family further perpetuates dominant ideology of race and gender instead of challenging it. In terms of race, Modern Family suggests white people superiority over people of color. The research also reveals that in its gender depiction, the sitcom maintains the ideology of patriarchy. In the end, the thesis concludes that Modern Family contradicts its mission to present the modern day American society."

"Pada masa Disney Renaissance, Disney telah mencoba untuk mendobrak stereotip gender yang telah melekat dengan mereka selama ini. Walaupun begitu, tidak dapat dipungkiri stereotip gender masih terpatri karena masyarakat telah diajarkan mengenai stereotip gender dari media sejak kecil. Hal ini juga terlihat pada dua film animasi adaptasi Disney The Little Mermaid (1989) dan Tangled (2010). Tulisan ini menganalisa berbagai streotip gender yang tersembunyi dalam kedua film tersebut dan bagaimana stereotip-stereotip tersebut tetap terlihat walaupun telah berusaha disembunyikan. Ada dua hal yang akan dianalisa dalam tulisan ini. Yang pertama penggambaran good woman dan bad woman menyimbolkan konsep beauty klasik. Yang kedua, penggambaran laki-laki, kejadian-kejadian di film serta lagu tetap memiliki kebiasan yang sama seperti dahulu. Hasil analisa film ini adalah film-film Disney tetap mengandung stereotip gender walaupun telah berusaha disembunyikan.

During the era of Disney Renaissance, Disney has been trying to break the gender stereotypes that have been closely related to them. However, it is undeniable that gender stereotypes are still imprinted because people have been fed by gender stereotypes from the show since they are young. It is also shown in two Disney adaptation animation movies titled The Little Mermaid (1989) and Tangled (2010). This writing examines various evidences of gender stereotypes that are hidden in both movies and how they are still seen although the creators have kept them hidden. There are two major points that will be examined in this paper. First, the depiction of good woman and bad woman is symbolizing the classical beauty concept. Second is the depiction of man, the act, and the song is still containing the same ‘rule’ as previous time. This paper is concluded by a statement that Disney’s movies are still containing gender stereotypes although they have been tried to be hidden."

"Studi ini meneliti perbedaan gender pada interupsi antara mahasiswa dan mahasiswi di Fakultas Ilmu Pengetahuan Budaya Universitas Indonesia serta faktor yang mempengaruhinya. Mahasiswa dan mahasiswi memiliki tendensi untuk berkomunikasi dengan cara yang berbeda, dan hal ini dapat diamati pada cara mereka menginterupsi satu sama lain di dalam suatu percakapan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa berdasarkan strategi-strategi interupsi seperti question tags, hedges, dan intonasi yang mengacu kepada teori dari Tannen (1993) dan beberapa penelitian terkait dari Ersoy (2008), Ativoragoon dan Panyametheekul (2013) dan Cowie (2000). Berdasarkan hasil yang didapatkan, mahasiswi cenderung menggunakan tipe high considerateness, terlihat dari penggunaan question tag dan hedges yang lebih banyak; di sisi lain, mahasiswa menggunakan tipe high involvement, terlihat dari penggunaan ujaran singkat dan intonasi naik lebih banyak ketika menginterupsi. Selain itu, mahasiswa cenderung menginterupsi ketika ingin mengganti topik atau mengoreksi ujaran sementara mahasiswi memberikan pernyataan persetujuan dan dukungan dalam percakapan. Kesimpulan yang didapat pada penelitian ini adalah bahwa strategi interupsi pada mahasiswa dan mahasiswi berbeda sebagai akibat dari kecenderungan dominasi.

This study examines gender differences in interruptions among male and female students in Faculty of Humanities University of Indonesia as well as the factor affecting them. Male and female students have a tendency to communicate differently, and this can be observed by the way they interrupt each other in a conversation. This paper is aimed to analyzed based on interruption strategies such as the use of question tags, hedges, and intonation by referring to Tannen?s theory (1993) and some studies related from Ersoy (2008), Ativoragoon and Panyametheekul (2013) and Cowie (2000).

According to the results, it is found that female students tend to use high considerateness style which indicated by using more question tags and hedges; on the other hand, male students use high involvement style which shown by performing more short utterance and raising intonation while doing interruptions. Moreover, male students have a tendency to interrupt when they want to switch topic and correct the utterance or information while female students give words of agreement and support within the conversation. This research concludes that the interruption strategies used by the students vary as a consequence of the dominance tendency."
