"ABSTRAKThis article would follows the history of the concept of territoriality as described by Schmitt andKant which place the appearance of territorial attachment to a context. The author wants to pointout the problems that arise when the territory is taken from that context and adopted in aglobalized world which has a different context. Taking territory as the undeniable norm of amodern state contributes to create some latent problems: ethnic or religious identity issues thatneed to subject to national identity, inability to deal with non-territorial political entities, andinability to imagine effective ways to mobilize effective authority regardless of material capacity.This article concludes with a suggestion to reopen the discussion about the importance ofterritoriality for a country and whether the concept can still serve as an assumption of statesecurity and unity"

"This book offers a comprehensive, highly informative and interdisciplinary study on territorial integrity and the challenges globalization, self-determination and external interventions present. This study aims at not only to fill an epistemological gap in this regard, but also answer the question of whether International Law is adequately equipped to help states address these challenges. The author argues that the biggest threat that many states are confronted with today is their disintegration rather than their obsolescence, and that International Law has not often been able to prevent that eventuality. In fact, states, when they were not destroyed by war, managed to survive, thanks to the flexibility of territoriality, i.e. their ability to adjust to difficult situations as they arose. "

"Penelitian ini memfokuskan konflik antara Jepang dan Tiongkok terkait teritorial kepulauan Senkaku yang dimulai sejak abad 14 dan memuncak sejak tahun 1968 hingga 2016. Pemilihan topik ini sangat menarik karena kedua negara saling memperebutkan kepemilikan kepulauan Senkaku. Substansi penelitian ini berkisar pada penjelasan dan analisis dinamika konflik yang tidak terlepas dari sumber-sumber sejarah dan legalitas teritorial yang belum dapat diselesaikan hingga kini. Penulis menganalisis berbagai sumber pustaka untuk meneliti topik ini dengan pendekatan sejarah. Dari penelusuran dan analisis data dapat disimpulkan bahwa Jepang dan Tiongkok memerlukan waktu yang cukup panjang. Walaupun ada berbagai alternatif penyelesaian yang dapat dinegosiasikan namun kedua belah pihak tidak membawa konflikini ke pengadilan internasional.

The focus of this research was on conflict between Japan and Tiongkok over Senkaku island, which had story started since 14th century and emerged to surface at 1968 until now, 2016. The interest of the topic was on the conflict of these two countries on their claim over Senkaku island. The main idea of the research was on historical resources and analyzes over dynamic disputed territory until now. Author used historical research method to analyze books related to the topic. Based on data analyses, Japan and Tiongkok takes long time to solve the dispute. Aside of some negotiated alternative solutions, both conflicting parties had not decided yet to solve the case at the international court."

"Klaim teritorial Cina mencakup hampir seluruh wilayah perairan di Laut Cina Selatan. Dengan didukung oleh kekuatan ekonomi dan militernya sebagai sebuah great power baru di Asia Pasifik, Cina mengerahkan banyak dana untuk melakukan diplomasi dengan negara-negara pengklaim lain dan tak segan menggunakan jalur kekerasan. Dalam beberapa kasus, Cina bahkan melakukan langkah-langkah yang agresif sehingga menimbulkan keresahan bagi negara-negara litoral, khususnya negara-negara anggota ASEAN yang terlibat konflik dengan Cina di Laut Cina Selatan. Sementara itu, Indonesia, sebagai negara terbesar di ASEAN, justru melakukan pendekatan terhadap Cina baik itu dari segi diplomasi maupun militer dengan tetap mempertahankan hubungan baik dengan Amerika Serikat. Penelitian ini akan membahas mengapa Indonesia, sebagai sebuah middle power, memilih untuk melakukan hedging sebagai respon dari konflik yang melibatkan great power kawasan.

China’s territorial claim extended along the waters of South China Sea. With the support of its economic and military power as a rising power of Asia Pacific, China exert a lot of expense to conduct diplomacy with other claimant states, and did not hesitate to use its force. China’s effort to asset its claim seen as am agresive behavior, and developing concern among the littoral state, especialy members of ASEAN who are involved with China in the dispute of South China Sea. Meanwhile, Indonesia, as the largest country in ASEAN, approaching china both in diplomacy and military aspect while still maintaining a good relation with United States. This study will discuss further about decision-making and rationale of Indonesia as a middle power country, in response to a conflict that involving a regional great power."
